Inverter/ Charger not charging

My Xantrex 458 inverter inverts but won't charge, even though charge light on top left of inverter says charging. Can they be repaired? Only time batteries charge is when engine is running.

Going to shop on Weds.

I would hook up to shore power. Then put a volt meter across the 12 volt side to see if there is any output voltage. If not, then the charger portion of the inverter may be shot. If you have a remote panel it should tell you the charging status of the inverter when plugged into power. Aside from all that, how are you judging the charge on the batteries? Voltage alone will not tell you. You need an inexpensive charge tester or hydrometer to really tell. I bought a really nice electronic charger this year. The first battery I charged took 3 and a half hours to charge even though it was supposed to be "fully charged" Good luck.

Along with what Easy Rider says, that series of converters/inverters comes with a low battery voltage shut down. If your battery set has a shorted cell, and is less then 10V, the charger will not charge it. If your battery set is just exhausted, they say to charge it up first, then their automatic circuitry will take care of if from there.

You should check the water levels in the batteries right off.
