Ok, ther eare many possible answsers.. First: DO you actually have an inverter? If the residential fridge is an after market downgrade you might not have one.. If it was factory installed you do, and even if it's after market you might.. But the fridge may not be wired to the inverter it may only be wired to main (Mine can be switched).

Second you said "Why does it not come on when we start the engine" The inverter does not run off the motor home enginek, it runs off the battery, those, in turn MAY be charged by the engine but in my case not fast enough to power the fridge (if trip takes more than two hours the fridge will draw the batteries down and I have to fire the generator)

Thrid.. If the batteries are too small. or too old or if the connections are dirty then when the inverter kicks in for just an instant it attempts to draw maximum power.. if the batteries drop to say 8 volts AT THE INVERTER (May be 12 at the battery) it ... objects and refuses to work.

Those are the primary thoughts.

I hang out in S.E. GA for the near future (Few years) if you are down this way I work for coffee and can take a look.. I'm sure there are others who can scattered about but the usually price is not coffee.. though it is a brew.
