Inverter question
My inverter appears to be an add-on unit. It has two fat cables that run from the house batteries, and a single cable that runs to a single outlet in the rig. Turning the switch to "on" does not supply power to the outlet. It doesn't connect to any other systems so it doesn't appear to be a breaker.
Is there a fuse or breaker in the unit itself that could have tripped?

Some units do have a resettable breaker on the inverter itself. The ones I've seen are 1500 watt or larger units. The breakers I've seen are pop out breakers and not a toggle type switch. I have a couple of smaller inverters (300 - 400 watts) that do not have an external resettable breaker.
If you have a VOM you can test for voltages at the input and the output. the problem could be in the outlet but you need to be able to test connections with a meter.

As noted there should be a breaker on the inverter, There should also be a "T" fuse in the fat cable running to the positive battery terminal and there may be two switches for the inverter, one local one remote.
NOTE: The two fat cables, Either put 'em in a wire loom or tape them side by side as much of the run as you can. (Source Xantrex Customer Service, when it really was customer service).
And of course check and clean all connections, epically the fat cables, and if all else fails.. TRUE SINE WAVE inverters are better than MSW when it comes time to replace. (NOTE: it does not matter what you are replacing).

What brand of inverter is it? If you told, we could probably find a manual for it and know for sure if it has a breaker. It very likely does, though.
It should also have some indicators on it, at least a couple lights to indicate On and trouble. What is their status?

Many inverters have spade fuses not breakers. They will be on the outside of the unit.

Well, it's an Xpower inverter 1000. It must be a discontinued version because the manual I found on line looks like a very different unit. Input power is about 10v, but turning on the power switch does not light up the power light or anything. There is no breaker or fuse of any kind visible on the outside of it either. Guess I have a dead one.

Your supply voltage is to low. Inverters have a low voltage shutdown, not sure but I belive it is around 10.5 volts. You either have a problem with your battery charger, batteries, or cable connections.

Mine has a shutdown at 11.2V claiming that should not prevent starting of an engine in good tune. This is on my boat and the inverter is a Freedom probably 1995 production date for the inverter.

If the input voltage is 10v the batteries supplying it are dead or there is a wiring issue. Most likely its not the inverter that is the problem.

Well I think I just figured this out. I took the rig in and had the batteries checked and they were surprisingly fine. So, I got into the battery box yesterday and noticed the batteries are wired in series. They tested at 6+ volts each.
I'm thinking that the PO changed to 6 volt, rewired the battery compartment but didn't correct the wiring for the inverter so it shut down for low voltage.
Why did it read 9 volts on the inverter before you may ask? All I can guess is that I read my meter upside down!

run the engine and hold your boost battery start for 3min that gonna give the power you need to know if the charger of the inverter is working
when you release your battery boost it should by it self .

Hi Fred,
Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately I can't figure out what you're saying. Can you rephrase?
