Is $70k too much to pay for a rebuilt Cummins engine?
I’m looking for advice on recovering the cost of a failed engine rebuild by an unscrupulous mechanic that refuses to honor their warranty.
Overview:- The engine was damaged by raccoon urine that corroded the intake manifold cover and got into the cylinders.
- I fulltime and work from my rig, so the rebuild spanned 7 months at my site.
- The rebuilt engine failed 50 miles into the first trip.
- I was towed 4 times, and the mechanic refuses to honor his warranty.
- The Bureau of Auto Repair is unresponsive.
I have much more detail in the form of copious documentation, pictures of the damage caused by negligence, etc.
Do we have any legal resources (in Southern CA) that support the RV community?

Did you price a new engine ?
A salvaged engine ?
Did you think this guy was cheap?
And you were saving $$$$s
Are you adding towing fees ?
In the end.

How about a lawsuit?
Or contact the local PD about a fraud investigation.

I've paid around $30,000 twice to do an inframe rebuild on a Cummins ISX 650. Right now my engines is on it's third rebuild in 56,000 miles
All rebuilds have been done at Cummins shops.
$70,000 is at least double what you should have been charged for an in shop rebuild.

And how does raccoon urine get into the engine....
And no one heard or saw the raccoon?
$70K?
This is starting to sound like a piece of fiction...

After reading this, I’m sure glad I have a Cat engine. Obviously something is not engineered very well on that engine. What ever happened to the million mile engines?

Besides that the CAT will keep the mice and racoons out of the engine bay.

Doesn't $70K total the RV anyway?
Reading the old thread, something is missing from this story.
The old question was "will it affect resale". The current thread says engine replacement. Ummm, yes, an engine replacement does affect resale price.

That is definitely not the whole story. It is very long, so I just gave a quick overview. The original repair was done incrementally over 7 months as the mechanic dug further into it. The cost for that repair was over $30k in parts alone. This, is the minimum of what I am looking to recover. The engine failed due to negligence and it cost me about $30k for parts and labor for a second shop to replace the engine with a rebuilt engine from Cummins.
As of this point, you are right. I am screwed, but I'm looking for some legal assistance to get partially unscrewed.
