Is a RV "Residential" refrigerator the same as the type in my house?

I see adds for MHs that say they have a residential refrigerator. I thought the the residential type is more desirable then a regular RV refrigerator because it didn't use gas (so no worry of fire).

Then I saw this ad that said "Gas/110V Residential Refrigerator" which got me wondering. Is the residential type the same as the one in my house - or does "residential style" just mean it "looks" like the one in my house but still uses gas to cool?

From the photo in the Ad, it looks like the type in my home kitchen.

Like you I understand "residential" to be an electric only, usually slightly smaller, but otherwise same as found in our kitchen at home. The unit in the picture you posted appears to be a electric only French door residential unit. But I haven't looked at any gas absorption models in many years if that is a gas/AC fridge they have come a long way.

Typo in the ad, that's a true all electric residential 120 volt unit.

yes, it's the same as the one in your house. runs on AC only...hookup, inverter, solar or genny. while it eliminates the possibility of an LP-fueled fire there is still a possibility of fire since it uses electricity. if you want to eliminate all possibility of fire you'll need to use an old fashioned ice box or cooler.

The refrigerator in our motor home is identical to the one we just put in our remodeled kitchen in the sticks and bricks...identical.

Only in a sense that they both get cold. Otherwise no they are not alike.

The Whirlpool fridge in my coach is the exact same one that I have in my house. Only difference is Newmar added a locking mechanism to keep the doors locked when traveling.

Yes, they call them residential to differentiate them from the rv absorption type fridges that can be 3 way fridges (shore power, battery, or gas)

the most important difference to me, is that it keeps things cold versus all the stuff I had to throw away with the rv type fridge :(

By the way, do NOT assume that fridge fires are from gas operation only. Anytime the boiler part of the cooling unit overheats, a fire is a possibility. The boiler normally operates at around 350 degrees (F), and an overheat condition can reach 800 or more. Whether running on electric or gas. That's more than enough to ignite nearby wood or paper, and far more than enough to ignite leaking hydrogen gas if there is a pinhole or cracked weld near the boiler.

A typical RV fridge doesn't have a fan nor run on freon coolant like residential fridge.
