Is it hard to drive a class A Motorhome and do you need a Special license?

For DW and I, we find driving a motorhome fairly easy, and the more we practice, the better we get at it. The type of license required depends on the state where your driver's license is issued.

My wife says our Class A diesel pusher is easier to drive than my son's F250 super crew 4X4. There are a couple of things about the coach you have to get comfortable with, but after that, no problems.

It is not more difficult to drive than a car. But it is very different. You are driving a whale that does NOTHING qucikly. (with the possible exception of getting you in trouble in a hurry if you don't pay attention.)

There are some good driving schools out there that are well worth the cost if you have no experience driving an RV.

You go slower, turn wider, stop in greater distance, take up more room....

I would think it depends on what you are used to driving. For most people it is not hard but it is definatly different to driving a small car. turns especially right turns are different and depending on the length of the motorhome you are thinking about tail swing needs to be considered. there are driving schools that will give you lessons for class A that will give you the confidence you need and will help you drive safely. The more you drive the more confident and comfortable you wiil be. It isn't really that much harder than a car or a truck just a little bigger.

Pertaining to your question about needing a special license, it will depend on the state of residence and the weight of the RV.

Looking at your profile, it reflects you are possibly a resident of West Virginia. According to the Changing Gears website summary list, West Virginia does not require a special license for any recreational vehicle. Double check with your local DMV, however. If you are not in West Virginia, here is the Changing Gears website link:

RV Driver's License Requirements

The state we are licensed in, Nevada, requires a non-commercial Class B license for driving rigs over 26,000 lbs. GVWR (just about all diesel pushers). So that means to be properly licensed that we are required to pass both a written test and a road test which turns out to be, in our state, the same tests given to a Class B CDL applicant. An RVer just doesn't need the DOT physical card where a CDL licensed driver does.

As long as you are properly licensed in your state of residence/domicile, you are good to go in any state because of reciprocity agreements. So even though as Nevada residents, we have to have a Class B license, if you come to Nevada as a tourist with your RV, you are okay to drive it in Nevada with your West Virginia license.

It's actually ridiculous as we both could be driving the exact same RV in Nevada but we as residents have to have a Class B license and you as a visitor do NOT and we could be both driving the exact same vehicle.

That's why many think that licensing requirements should be the same in every state and there should be federal rules that apply to all drivers.

In some states it is length, some states it is weight and, some states don't require an endorsement.

When I had my 33' 5er, it sometimes took me 2-3 tries to park here. With my Breeze, I can usually get it in the first try.
