It happened to me

Well, after 2 years of totally reliable service from our used 2004 Gulfstream Crescendo with Cat 330, we had a crank-no-start situation at a campground labor day weekend. Wanted to go dump, but no joy (for the whole family) in the state park. FTL-HELP spent over an hour walking me through every electrical check imaginable (wonderful people), but no joy. Long story short, had to get towed Sunday as no one would be willing to come Labor Day. Wife and kids (nor I) overjoyed. Our first ever use of Coachnet was very helpful. Weekend ended, and coach was towed to a Freightliner facility. 5+ hours of diagnosis, and it's...the HEUI pump. I have an Easycare warranty, so now I'm concerned as I've read mixed reviews. They have to send an inspector, so now I wonder if they will try to weasel out. Reasonably happy, they will cover all but ~$300 of the cost (plus deductible). I don't understand about the last $300 but am relieved about them covering ~85%. We hope to have it back soon (running again). We can stop worrying, and wait for the call.

The estimate is probably over what they consider "reasonable and customary" so they won't pay it.

Supposedly done, but I can't have it back until the Warranty company pays their part. I'll post what was done and how it runs after I get it back.

Forget "how it runs" as I'm sure it will be fine as frog hair. What would concern me is: "what caused it to fail?" Did a bearing or some other physical problem occur? As you now know: You are dead-as-you-lay until this item is replaced. What a predicament in troubleshooting down to find the component at fault!

Just "what" would cause it to fail in the first place? Someone on irv2.com Cat Forum had reported that pre-'05 model Cat's had a design type now changed to a different one. Any light you shed would be of benefit.

Well, I got it back. They were not able to provide any information as to the cause of the failure. I had read about failures around 03's and asked if they used the "updated" design I read about. They said they "use the latest and greatest.". I also asked if they flush the oil galleys, and they claimed they do. There was no itemization that they added any oil, just added some antifreeze they said they had to drain? It runs fine. I think I will change the oil and filter before we use it again. The EasyCare warranty paid all but ~$630. The deductible is $250, so it could have been much worse. At least I have it back, and it starts. This failure was sudden with NO warning. I parked, shut off, started it, moved to get more level ground beneath, shut down and that was it. Not to start again. It took 2.5 weeks, good thing this was an hour from home! We'd be stranded if this were on a trip. We can't miss that much time at work.
It only has 54000 miles (just turned on the way home from Stoops Freightliner). I hope no reoccurrance happens due to particles, which is what I read happens. Typically the gear disintegrates.
