Just My Luck/Fuel Prices Up

Uh......not sure if you know this but I'm one of the friends from "up north" and where I live, we're buying gas at about $5.98 per gal. I was just on holidays last month in your country and couldn't believe it when I was FORCED to pay $3.81 per gal. It really made me mad to save $162.00 on a tank fill. I mean.....who do the oil companies in the States think they are?

BTW, I don't think it is the oil companies up here that are the problem. It's the tax on fuel. Government.

California gas up another dime overnight! Unleaded now a nickel more than diesel!
... That would be 4.49.9 at my neighborhood Pilot, if they have any.

Have to Agree! The OP was venting about the high cost of fuel and control of power via the oil companies. Funny to me how many people spin their political personal opinions into an otherwise generic discussion!

It really doesn't matter whether it's oil company, government, tourism, etc. that raises the cost of fuel or keeps it pricy. Unfortunately, It's a cost of owning and driving a gas powered vehicle.

Personally, I'll keep doing it till I can't afford to.

I do feel bad for the people that these costs affect their livelihoods. However, this isn't that forum, I guess unless the RV directly relates to it.

I agree with most that's been said. If our country had determined to be energy independent 10 years ago instead of waiting until now, it would be a different ballgame. Someone mentioned about a station owner filling his tanks at a lower price, then selling that same gas at a higher price the next week when prices jumped. Well, it seems to me that works two ways. If he has to fll his tanks while the prices are high, and the price drops the next week, he may be selling it for less than he paid for it! I would think that it balances out over a long period of time.
I don't think the station owners are the ones getting rich, it's the oil companies and the distributors. JMHO

BTW, did diesel prices in CA jump along with the gas prices?

Firstly, thank you to the posters for moderating the language - it is appreciated.

I think a main point here is that there is nothing new in what we are seeing. I remember watching the gasoline prices in the early- to mid-seventies rise up to the point of $1/gal, and thinking that that was incredible/unbelievable. Since then they have continued to generally rise, with intervening big bumps (both up and down). Nothing has changed with that pattern in the last 40 years - and personally I do not expect it to change (one of the reasons my day car, and toad, is a mini-cooper @ 42mpg ).

I agree with other posters that we made the choice to purchase vehicles that have 100+ gal fuel tanks and get ~8-10 mpg. I believe that the current (and future variabillity) of the cost of feeding these things should be **part** of the decision to make the purchase - I know it was for us. As the economy picks up, and world-wide demand for oil increases, my guess is that we should **expect** the price to increase at that time - and again, that should be part of the decision to buy (and to discuss here).

That said, part of what definitely belongs here is strategies that can be used to reduce (or at least buffer) costs. I have already seen a couple suggestions (thank you posters ) ... and look forward to seeing more!

Only a nickel more than diesel....used to be that unleaded was always more than diesel except in the past several years - what gives? Diesel was made to do something with a byproduct of gas production...so now we're paying more for what used to be a way to burn off the garbage, so to speak.

You have to look at gas prices in a comparative market. When a gallon of milk is $4.00 and a gallon of gas is $5.00 the best buy is the gas. Start out on the highway with a gallon of milk and see how long it takes you to go 10 miles

In my part of Florida, diesel always seems to be 40 to 60 cents more than unleaded.
