Keys
We recently had a neighbor in a park look after our dog for a day. We gave him a key to our coach (2002 Monaco) so he could get the dog.
When we returned he gave us back the key.
The next week we had to be away for quite a few hours and he said he
would look after the dog again. We forgot that he gave us back our key.
We came home and found he had the dog out for a walk. My wife asked how he opened the door and he said "with my key". She told him that he had given us back the key. He got the key and we went over to the coach and he unlocked the door. We looked at the key and knew it was not ours.
We went back to his coach (1997 National) and he locked and unlocked the door with "HIS" key. I tried my key on his coach and found that it worked.
My door key is the same key for the storage doors.
I heard that car manufacturers only have "seven" keys for all the vehicles they produce. So in reality every seventh vehicle off the line has the same lock.
Was surprised to find a 1997 National and a 2002 Monaco had the exact same key.
One in a million!!!!!

Seems that nearly all Newmars used the same compartment key.
Glad my entry has a dead bolt lock too.
Used to be that car manufactures , used keys ( locks); single sided; with 5 tumblers and 3 sizes of tumblers so , that translated into every 125th car having the same key. ( 5x5x5) Newer 7 tumbler , double sided , with 5 tumbler sizes have many more keys without duplication. ( 7x7x7x7x7x2)
Then there's the chipped keys for added security.
With the 7 tumblers locks , I only heard of one instance ( pre chip ) where a ladies car ( green Dodge ) was driven away from a casino parking lot by another green Dodge ,car owner , who returned to the parking lot while the first owner was filling out a stolen vehicle report.

I spent two years delivering 5th wheels of all models from factories in Elk Hart Indiana to dealers all over the US. I have and still use those keys on my coach. I am in the process of changing out all locks. Started with the door, which now takes two separate keys one for latch one for deadbolt, with most honesty is not a problem but I like knowing my MH is as secure as I can reasonably make it.

Or, more likely you both had worn out locks.
Senior moment with our last RV, she was 13 years old at the time were I flicked the latch and closed the door, keys inside
Had one of those swiss army knives in my pocket, one half of the scissors and a gently wiggle and door unlocked. Job one, retrieve keys and make sure I don't do it again. Job 2, order new lock barrel

on less expensive units, just about all manufacturers use whats known as a 751 key. That key will open just about any non baggage door lock on a trailer or motorhome including but not limited to fresh water doors, engine comparment locks, storage compartments etc. Being in the business, all my salespeople, service advisors, porters and so on, have master sets of keys. These keys will open any door or compartment on any rv other than the deadbolts used on most rv style door locksets. If you want your rv to be truly secure, change out your baggage door locks with high quality units and add a residential style deadbolt to your door.

I kinda wish my rig was like that. Its a 2000 Winne and I have 7 keys for it.
1: Ignition
2: Hood (round barrel key)
3: Door lock
4: Door deadbolt
5: Entertainment compartment
6: Fresh water
7: Storage compartments
When I got it I had to buy color code thingy's for the keys so I knew what was what.

They do make combination locks you can use to change out all your storage area locks with if anyone so desires. With all those compartments it would cost plenty but for compartments with more valuable items it may pay off.

Not true for cars - it was about 1000 unique keys 25 years ago, and today it's more like 10,000. Rv's however, are a different story!

Not at all. Many Rvs use the same key code (the ubiquitous 751 mentioned above), and there are a few other keys that are quite common. Most RV dealers (and some campground owners) have a half dozen keys on hand that will get many, if not most, RVs open if needed.

The combination locks I mentioned on my last post cost about $17.00 each. They can be set to about 1,000 different combinations. If you are like a friend in mine he has one compartment customized as liquor cabinet. If he had teens he could have his own comb. To this one storage area. Since we travel all summer we buy Xmas gift s along the way this locker could also benefit a comb. Lock with it's own lock. I would guess the supplier would make a deal on an order of 10 or more.

All of the baggage doors have electric locks.
The door has two locks, one is a deadbolt.
The Monaco Windsor was not a "cheap" unit and
no, the locks were not worn out.
I was just surprised to see two different manufacturers
with the same key.

Fleetwood Discovery 2015
My philosophy is...
If you lock it, your the only person who has to get in there.
Locking the compartments gives more opportunity to bang my head on the slides.
There is nothing in any of the compartment worth stealing.
You neighbors have the same junk.
If the locked compartment is broke into, the door, lock and repairs are more costly than the junk inside.
I do not park in questionable neighborhoods.
I only lock us in at night.
2 pistols are in my bedroom....

I too have a high-end model, and no, it doesn't use the old 751 key. But they only use a half-dozen different keys, so not much real protection. We don't lock often anyway (even wit the electronic lock fob), but we don't frequent risky areas either.
