Kwikee step issues

I did a lot of posting at the end of this thread: Kwikee step breaking control linkage!

I figured it was time to start my own. I have tested all the wiring and the only one that is not working is the door jamb switch. I have 0 volts either way, door open or door closed. It should be 12 volts when the door is closed and 0 volts when the door is open. I pulled the door jamb switches and found no connection problems and the switch itself looks good. I presumed the switch on the door would just be a dummy switch to make the ground connection for the door jamb switch but that isn't the case. On the inside of the door the wiring from the switch runs to a control box, I think it is for the remote control door lock feature.

I also found that if I close the screen door the steps will retract. Open the screen door and the steps work fine. I find this quite odd as there are no wired connections on the screen door running to anything. With the screen door closed and the steps retracted if I close the main door the steps extend. What in the heck is going on here?

I also ran a new test on the motor and along with a shot of some oil on the steps joints it works fine. I am most certain that the voltage is supposed to come for the control unit for the door jamb switch but I am really baffled at how the steps retract via the screen door. Anyone shed some light on this for me?

I guess it is just time to pony up for a new module as I am thinking that is going to solve my problem.

My gues is that there is a magnetic proximity switch for thye screen door. If so then somewhere embedded in the screen door frame is a magnet. Before I would buy anything I would first call Kwikee tech and tell them what you have found out and see what they say. This way maybe if they tell you what the problem is and what to buy and it doesn't fix the problem then they would be obligated to take it back and give you a refund.

You nailed it Mike. On the bottom outside corner of the screen door is the magnetic switch. The switch I thought and was messing with was the remote door lock wiring.

When the screen door is closed it all works as it should. When the outside door is closed lightly the steps will stay in. If I close the screen door while it is attached to the main door the steps won't close.

So I get to keep all my money and don't have to buy anything for it. It is just a matter of getting it properly aligned which will wait for warmer weather. What a relief to finally get it figured out.

I would bet that there are a lot of guys that had the same problem with their steps.

The magnet is in the screen... From the sounds of it your screen is bent a bit so the outside door is not holding it fully closed.

My guess, and I stress GUESS is that the lower corner of the door is bent out just a bit.. You may just need to "Bend" the screen... not so much as you'd notice, (there shoudl be no visible bend) or put a foam rubber "Bumper" on the outside lower corner of the door (the latch side)

While I was inside the coach with the screen door closed I pulled the main door shut and it pushes the screen door in about an 1" on the bottom corner by the magnet. Purely a matter of adjustment now but at least I don't have to spend any money on a control unit or motor. Thanks
