In comparing late model Class A RVs, the newer models (post 2010) include some features that many consider undesirable like, DEF and Schwintek slides.

Do you feel that the state of the art has taken a step backwards, or do you feel there are other advantages of the newer models outweigh these issues?

To me the newer models are steps forward. Yes, the DEF is somewhat of a hassle for some, but the mileage is actually a little bit better with it and it's not a huge cost to run. The newer conveniences like the state of the art electronics and appliances make these units more livable than most of the older units that I have seen. Amenities like tile floors and composite counter tops that used to be found only in high end rigs are now more common in entry level units. I think the newer motor homes are a step up from what the rigs used to be.

DEF is a way to meet emission requirements for new diesel vehicles. Owners of vehicles so equipped need to get educated, they can't just put in fuel and go. Every couple of fill ups they need to also fill DEF tank.
As to the Schwintek slides, they are a much more simplified mechanism from previous hydraulic or cable operated ones. After reading many complaints about them, it seems to be more an issue of the coach maker than the mechanism. They are designed about as simply as a mechanism to move a large sliding section of wall could be designed and only require simple tools to repair or replace components. The RV maker must make sure their slide and opening are square and the slide not exceed the mechanism's parameters. Care in installing and not burying the mechanism behind trim and such that make later maintenance near impossible is not the responsibility of Lippert, but the RV builder. Most of the complaints seem to focus on just a few builders, not all RVs equipped with Schwintek mechanisms seem to have issues. I'd use the problem brands as an indicator of the general quality of their attention to detail and steer clear.

I do not know about step backwards. DEF is mandated by federal law. You are complaining about something added to a diesel motor home that is required by federal law ?
