Do you know of any rebuilders in the SCV area?
The other question I have is why didn't my alternator fail light come on when the voltage dropped?
I believe that this is an internally excited alternator but I could be wrong.

Steve,
Here is the link to your Leece-Neville Alternator which has drawings, spec's, etc.

Here is the Leece-Neville 200 amp alternator that is used on my coach. Mine is a Duvac alternator. Yours may not be.
Prestolite - Leece Neville
Is it possible that your Alt Fail relay is defective? Does the Alt Fail indicator come on when you first turn on the ignition during the self-check mode?

No, actually the alt fail light doesn't come on. I will call Monaco on Monday and talk to them about it.

I just replaced a 160 Amp Leece Neville with the 28SI. Here's a link to my thread. There may be some info that will help.

The 28si was cheaper and works great.

Had to replace our Leece-Neville Model #A001090772, 160 amp alternator in our 2004 Dutchstar last year. Cost for the alternator from Spartan was $630. I kept the old alternator with plans to get it rebuilt this year.

Well if the light doesn't come on when you first turn the ignition switch to ACC prior to starting the engine THEN possibly the dash light bulb is defective and needs to be replaced.
All of the dash lights should come on briefly when you first turn the key. That is the self-checking mode.

I ordered the ACDelco unit as I don't have any time to get the other one rebuilt. Later I will take it in and then probably sell it.

Fixed it
I replaced the alternator today and it's charging away at 14.4v. Haven't checked amp output yet but will tomorrow. I purchased an ACDelco 28SI 200a alternator with pad mount. I talked to Monaco the other day and he explained to me that a Duvac alternator simply has an extra 10ga 12V wire attached to the regulator and the alternator is modified so that the field is excited by the "Duvac" terminal. I found the wiring diagram for my Panther and found that they eliminated the alt fail circuit in 2005 which is why I never saw a light. When I removed the alternator there was only the positive battery cable and the negative ground cable attached. The 28SI self excites when it sees an RPM ripple so no other wire is necessary. It does have "remote sense" if I want to add a 10ga wire with 12v and a fuse to the "S" terminal at the back of the alternator. The alternator is cooled with 2 internal fans and the only difficult part was pulling the pulley but I have enough gear pullers that it wasn't difficult at all (thank goodness for side radiators). The old pulley fits on the 28SI shaft and the locknut tightens it. I will overhaul the old alternator and keep as a spare. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Took the alternator apart and started testing. So far the stator is bad and it needs new bearings.

Sounds like what we had but a new one from a Newmar dealer was about $450 on Amazon. When it came it was in a Newmar box and Newmar label. Then I had the old one rebuilt for just less than $200 locally. Then we traded the Dutch Star in.
