Length restrictions in states
Hubby and i are tryin to decide on length MH to buy. We are planning on pulling a 20 ft car trailer for car, motorcycle and misc. Has anyone pulling a cargo trailer had problems with length restrictions ie tickets etc.

I've seen 45'ers pulling 20-25' trailers and have never seen one stopped. There are stories about California being picky in some desert areas though.

the only place I've heard of ticketing overlength RVs is at Glamis. Lots of yahoos and only a few ways in and out. Heard the CHP sits there and picks people off.
havent heard of it elsewhwere. A 20 footer won't raise any eyebrows. It's the 45' tag axle coaches pulling a 30' triple axle stacker that attracts the attention.

Most states allow 65' and as long as you don't look like a commercial vehicle, I believe most LEO's will let you slide if only a couple of feet over length. Attached is a web site by state for vehicle size restrictions.

I see 45 footers with long trailers on the interstates all the time. I think law enforcement have more important things to worry about than an RV'r hauling a trailer.

For a few years we were 73' long and traveled from WI to the west, SW and back. Never was even questioned. My son is 75' long with the same results. I met three rigs from NY who traveled to CA that were 80' in length. The only place they were concerned was in CA where they bought a $16 permit. The permit is easy to get as we have done the same. Just obey the speed limits and use common sense.

Glamis not so much about over-length
It is about drivers not having proper driving licenses...Non-CDL Class A
Easy to figure that those big toyhaulers etc are HEAVY
5th wheels over 15K GVWR and TTs over 10K GVWR require Non-CDL license.
Heavy trailer..CHP stops and first thing they ask for is 'Drivers License' please
Easy citations

Home state determines DL required. Like IN does not require any special DL so I am good in all 49 and DC. (Not driving coach to HI. ) Now if you live in TX, CA, or some other states you do need a different DL but it varies.

A good friend has a 45’ super c, and pulls a 39’ double stacker all over the West Coast with 3 race cars in it. He has never had a problem. 84’ is a long set-up.

I can only speak for Tx. Here for any vehicle over 26001 lbs, you must have a Special DL. I think that is the case in about 20 states too now. All the legal sizes and weights allowed on your roads are available on your DMV website.
In Tx: No combination of vehicles, other than a truck tractor-trailer combination may exceed 65 feet.

Question to those of you who do pull a trailer; How do you move it around when you get to your destination? Would like to get one, but not sure what I do with it when I get to an RV park.

I have talked to "hot shot" drivers, pickups pulling trailers, witching about over length tickets in Iowa. "We are not as long as a tractor trailer!" Would not press my luck in a RV...

Thanks for all the info. We have read lots of information concerning length in different states. Supposedly the state you are licensed in is what you are held to. Just wondering if anyone has had any run in with the popo. The question about what to do with your trailer in the park is good. Wondering the same thing.
