out of state plates
I pay almost $3,000 a year for a 5 year old coach. My neighbor has a rv with MT plates. Our state has no corporate or personal income tax, so by his not having instate plates, I'm paying for his kids schooling, the streets he drives on and police and fire protection. I called the number the state has setup (on billboards) and reported him. He now has in state plates...

Ouch...Your neighbor?
Where we used to live, there was a neighbor who was really strange. A couple that we knew lived behind us. The strange neighbor went to talk to them one day and give them a present, a bottle of homeade wine. They said that he was scary and they screamed at him to leave their yard and to never come back. We, on the other hand, allowed hime to come over with his wine and swim in our pool. The neighbor couldn't believe that we would do this. I told the neighbor that if the strange fellow ever flips out he will come to kill you and then ask if he can swim in our pool!
Oh...the neighbor was taken to a mental hospital and then a nursing home. He never came back home. I went to visit him and he said that he loved it there. He thanked me over and over for coming to see him. I felt good about that. Moral of the story...treat your neighbor the way you would want to be treated.
Happy trails, Joe

Puddinhead, you are lucky you are not my neighbor if you really did that . That is your first post on this forum. I hope your neighbor is not a member of this forum and figures out who you are .

Hmmmm, I wonder what percentage of those who are screaming about someone turning in this individual to the local taxing authorities are running with Montana plates???
If you are, and if you're in violation of your state's residence requirements for vehicle registration, you might want to go back and read puddinhead's post again. In the current economic environment where governmental entities are running substantial budget deficits and, as a result, taxes and fees are increasing continually, the typical taxpayer is going to be much more sensitive about those who, in his/her perception (rightly or wrongly), aren't carrying their share of the burden. I suspect that, as a result, there are going to be more, not fewer, knocks on the door from the tax man to check things out.

that's why its a slam dunk for me to go ahead and pay the tags on my 8 y.o. coach bought from a guy that has MT plates in Arizona. He is one of those guys not affraid to stand up and flip the bird to the tax man and say "come get me- we'll fight it out in court". But to me it not worth it, as I will never keep it out of the state for the statutory 5 months/ yr. To my knowledge my buddy never took it outside AZ either
However, in a few years when I do buy a new 300k coach to full time I will move my residency rather than pay 5000+ yr plates in AZ for a new coach. I do wanna live in MT and flyfish anyway......LOL

Rusty, the ones that scream the most that having the MH registered to a LLC is wrong are the ones who don't understand the law and this has been covered several times in this long thread. It is simple.....the MH is no longer registered to an individual so no residence requirement for that individual in that state, it is registered to a LLC, and that LLC is registered in Montana. It is a legal LLC in Montana that owns the MH. Now I am not a lawyer but I have talked to a lawyer about this and that is what they told me. I believe they probably know the law than us. The local state can't do anything because the MH is not registered to that individual in that state. I do not think that paying $3000 a year Ad Valorem tax is my share of the burden. That is four times the amount of property tax that I pay on my house. I don't believe that Ad Valorem tax is right. I have no objection to paying a standard fee for renewing my tags like everyone else but that Ad Valorem tax is wrong and obviously you don't have to pay it on your MH. The State Of Georgia has state income take, sales tax, property tax and Ad Valorem tax on certain items that they choose.

@ Mike I agree, our Plates are high in AZ because of the personal property tax componemt, luckily it goes down to something reasonable with an 8-10 year old coach. On a new coach its rediculous, and I definitely would be searching for another way to lower that hit including forming an LLC in MT.

Mike,
Please read my post again. Remember the "rightly or wrongly" proviso?? I'm not arguing the legality or even the morality of a Montana LLC - I'm merely stating what Average Joe Taxpayer's PERCEPTION is going to be. Typically, it'll be the same as puddinhead's, right? And, as the old adage goes, to Average Joe Taxpayer, his PERCEPTION is REALITY (even though it might be incorrect) - the owner of the Montana-plated RV is shirking his/her fair share of the burden. Therefore, he's gonna call the tax man.
Now, when the tax man cometh, it may not be any problem at all to explain that everything regarding the LLC and registration has been done by the book and is legal. My only point is that I would fully expect that there will be more, not fewer, visits from the tax man than we have seen in the past.

Considering what going on in the world (Egypt, Bahrain etc) where people are striking out and protesting signs of over-indulgence and things not being "fair", a nice shiney new coach is an easy target. Joe Citizen has a PERCEPTION that a motorhome is a sign of wealth, and a MT plate only ads fuel to the fire, especially when said citizen realizes a MT plate is tax-advantaged. In the future, as our society falls further into this anarchy, I'm affraid we will see more of this--- not less of it

Perhaps if the fees on registrations for RVs, boats, cars... did not get so out of control they wouldn't have the problem with people finding "alternative" ways to register their toys. Ever see a cruise ship registered in the U.S. ? Of course not. Too many regulations. We keep our MH registered in NY but could easily and AFAIK legally change it to Fl. If NY gets like what Ga sounds like of course we will look into another way to register.
I looked into Maine trailer registrations. A little cheaper but more important much easier. The Maine plates are good for 5 years. NY 1 year and expire in the middle of winter. Not handy for boat and MC trailers that are in storage. NY also expects you to pay some one to inspect trailers when on under 1000lb GVW all they need are lights and safety chains.
So the moral to my (sorry) rant is that if our state governments charged reasonable fees maybe no one would bother to circumvent them and would get enough revenue. Or they might just find more stuff to blow it on

The perception maybe that if you have a big nice MH you must be rich. It is always going to be a battle throughout the world and history of the "haves" and the "have nots". The fact is that my wife and I were purposely "have nots" for years so we could save our money for retirement and be a "haves" and enjoy it and pass it down to my children and grandchildren.

The poster who "turned in" his neighbor should be ashamed of himself. What is next: Stone him in the streets? Take the law into your own hands ? This is more like Communisim. The expression mind your own business comes to mind. I wonder if that poster has any friends? Do we turn in all people that we think might be evading ( or in this case avoiding) taxes. Exactly like Nazi Germany!!!
