Lockout Precaution
I had a weird thing happen the other day. We are getting ready for a trip and I went out to the coach in our driveway and couldn't unlock the door. After some jiggling I finally got the door open. This got me thinking that on the road if this happened I would be stuck. So as a precaution, at least in our yard, I left one window unlocked so I could get in with a ladder if it were necessary. Does anyone else take precautions for this type of problem while traveling?

I have had issues with the lock on our current motorhome. When we are traveling, I leave a window unlocked so I can get in it I get locked out at the door. When at home, I don't bother unlocking a window as I figure I have the tools,time, and/or locksmith available to address the problem. On the road, it's a different story

I got locked out one time (PIA). I purchased a combination lock box like the real estate sellers use. Mounted it in a bay with an extra set of keys in it.

Sounds more like a mechanical failure of the lock assembly more than a key issue.

But the bay's are locked too!!! (What do you do about that?). I have worried about this also. Try to keep a window unlocked when in camp... And consciously take a second set of keys when leave the rig to go somewhere. Worst comes to worst, I believe coach net has a lock-out service...

My propane compartment does not lock so this is what I also did. They are many places under the coach to put one of those boxes just depends how hard you want it to be to get. I drilled two holes in the angle iron frame and put the lock box through it, no rattling or banging, then I painted it black to match the rest of the compartment.

There are some small compartments that are unlocked...not the bay's. There's a lot of places to hide a key on an RV. I have a key hidden there that unlocks a compartment that has the entry key in it.
Lots of solutions.
Not difficult.

Your battery bay probably doesn't have a lock nor does your propane access area. It's easy to hide a key in either of these places.

The OP has a good point. This can happen to any of us at any time. Leaving a window unlocked is a good idea IF a ladder is available.
I had the door get stuck shut on my last coach. Fortunately I was in the coach and forced the door open. The screen door latch had stuck. It broke when I forced the door open. I never considered it the problem so didn't try the that handle. But, if I were outside things would have been worse. No key would fix the problem. All my windows were locked.
Then, last week, a friend was visiting. When he went out the door he bumped the lock. I heard him tugging on the door trying to get back in. I was in the coach so I simply unlocked the door and let him in. This is a good case for a hidden spare key/unlocked window.
I think you have made me a believer. I just unlocked a window. But now how do I keep it from locking when we put the shade down?  (RVing life is so much fun. We just have to remember to....)

This is hilarious!
Most of the replies have absolutely nothing to do with the OP's problem of not being able to open the door WITH his key which obviously must be IN his hand! 
To the OP- yes it's smart to leave a window unlocked just for the peace of mind if you cannot get the door open while on the road.

If the key will not turn try to lube it. One old trick is rub the key with a lead pencil and try working the key. Try not to use any wet lube because most will gum it up. If the key does turn then the linkage inside needs cleaning.

Bay key is in the propane tank bay. Door key is in one of the bays. ignition key is hidden inside.
Just have to remember where each hiding place is.
