Looking at a 1999 Monaco Dynasty

My wife and I are thinking about motorhomes and we are looking at a 1999 Monaco Dynasty. My question is that of the drive axles. I noticed that the 40' model changed from one to two axles sometime around 2000. Should this be a concern. We plan on traveling this great country after retirement in three years.

The tag axel was added in 2001 because of the bedrooms slide there was a weight problem

It would be wise to get the axle weights of the target rig at a public scale. The coach will have a front and rear axle rating and a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).

I would guess that the front is about 12,000 lbs, the rear 20,000 lbs and the GVWR 32,000 lbs.

32,000 lbs would then be the maximum load the vehicle should carry.

The difference between the weighed results and the about 32,000 lbs is the additional load that should be added to the travel weight of the rig.

Additional loads include people, additional fuel, fresh water, and clothing, food, toys, tools etc that were not on the rig when weighed.

Adding a rear tag axle increases the GVWR about 10,000 lbs and increases the actual weight about 2,000 lbs netting a gain of about 8,000 lbs of carrying capacity.

Dynasty is a nice coach.

While it's true it is a weight thing really, what you will generally see is coaches rated at 40 feet usually have a single rear axle, and the 42 footers and up have the tag axle.

Specifically, it's a 20k per axle federal weight limit that determines if a coach will have a tag axle or not.

On Monacos, the extra axle also adds 2 more air bags for stability and another set of brakes for stopping power.

We just bought a 2000 Dynasty 40' single axle, but while shopping I noticed that Monaco offered tag axle models from 38' up to 45' and single axle up to 40'. Go figure.
Even though the new Monaco isn't related to the old, the factory is still very helpful in answering questions and providing documents. They sent me copies of the original window sticker and the chassis lube guide.

biloblake, Dynastys are quality coaches, a good choice if you want a Monaco. Regarding weights and limitations, the front axle probably has a rating of 12000 or 13000 lb, the rear, 20000 lb. That means 6000 or 6500 on each wheel up front and 10000 on each side of the drive axle. If possible, have the coach weighed wheel-by-wheel to see how much it is (hopefully) under the limits so you will get a good idea of what load you can carry and where to place it. If wheel by wheel weighing is not possible you may be able to get weights front and rear and then left and right separately so you can figure out loading.

Regarding a tag axle, it'll certainly help in additional load capacity as well as handling. If that's important to you, consider an '01 or later Dynasty. According to Monaco's brochure archive on their website, in '01 Monaco put tag axles on all Dynastys that were 40 feet double slides; in '02 double slides, including the 38 footers and all 40+ ft. had a tag axle. In '03 and later all Dynastys became tag axle coaches. (Sorry their brochure archive doesn't go back any earlier but maybe someone with a '99 can advise you on how different the 99 is from the 2000.)

Good luck on your searching.
