looking for new or used mh

Hi Everyone
My cousin is looking for a motorhome at least 36' long, slideouts, and diesel. He would like to keep the cost at $160,000, not caring if it is new or used. My question to you is, if used, what should he lookout for. He would definitely have the motor checked, tires, and batteries. What else? We are new so we are not any help, this is our help. Thanks Karen

I would want to see service records. If you both are not comfortable with all the other systems , you may want to hire an RV Tech to checkout everything else. Plumbing , heating , air cond , slideouts , jacks. Air bags , Refrigerator , microwave , washer /dryer , tv's and entertainment center etc.

Private party seller (the widow), low mileage, stored indoors, like new condition, lovingly cared-for, properly maintained and serviced, new tires and batteries, algae-free fuel tank. Tell your cousin he can get a really nice 36'-40' DP for $160k and probably only 5 years old. Better to go with a pre-DEF and pre-DPF unit anyways. I finally found/bought my beautiful '01 coach thru a broker and paid a lot less than that. I did not use an inspector. If I had, I probably would have passed on what has turned out to be a fantastic buy. Over 14,000 miles, 32 states, 52 RV parks and 10 Walmart parking lots later...

I would add to the above that if he finds a used MH he should not be shy about taking it on a long test drive. The MH should meet all his handling expectations. The MH should track straight and true at 65mph, this is important so that the driver can relax on long trips. There should not be excessive nose dive when applying the brakes or excessive leaning into curves.

If he wants to drop that kind of coin on a MH have him look at some later model Country Coach or Foretravel MHs. These are both high quality coaches and they made 36' coaches up to about 2004 for CC and 2005 for ForeTravel. Have him go to oodle.com plug in what he's looking for and check the right boxes and it will send him daily updates. He might also consider some of the larger Dyanamax C+ coaches. A good gift to buy him would be a membership to rv.org It's well worth the money.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting

Check out Demartini RV - they have the great selection of very nice used MH's. Also a great web site. Nicely done.

That will give him a good idea of the selections. For 160's he can get a very nice used rig.

Newmar, Winnebago, Fleetwood, Monaco, Holiday Rambler are all ok as long as it is clean with maintenance records.

Avoid DeMartini RV unless you get EVERYTHING in writing and get your own mechanic to do the pre buy inspection. They sold me a dangerous high end 5th wheel then lied to me for over a month. More info below.

Was sold an unsafe trailer after paying $500 safety inspection and damage was pointed out to the dealer a week before I picked up the trailer. I bought a Trailer that had broken suspension and bad breaks. I live 400 miles away and had a relative who is a mechanic go inspect it before I bought it. During the inspection he saw the broken suspension and pointed it out to the only lady who works at the Sacramento location. She told him it would be fixed during the inspection. When buying it the cost was $500 more than agreed and when talking with Tim Martini the owner he said this was an safety inspection fee that I must pay to buy from him. I agreed to pay the fee for the inspection. I drove 400 miles to pick up the trailer. After doing the paperwork while leaving the brakes did not work on the trailer. Their on site mechanic went under the trailer 3 times and adjusted the brakes which is a very unsafe way to adjust brakes since you can not tell if you have any or too much friction. When I left with the trailer they barely worked and was very unsafe. I took the trailer to a RV repair to get then adjusted properly with the wheels off the ground. Additionally their mechanic knew this and said he did not have a jack strong enough to lift my trailer. When I dropped off the trailer to get the brakes adjusted they found the broken suspension parts that had been pointed out to them a week earlier. The trailer was sitting on its frame and had damaged 2 of the four tires. The repair parts had to be ordered so I had to leave the trailer in Northern California and drive 400 miles back home. I then had to drive 400 miles up and back to pick it up after the repairs. The total cost for repairs, tires, 800 miles round trip and vacation time used to make the drive cost me $5000. I contacted Rodney Sease from the moment I found out about the damage. He said don't worry we will help you cover the cost and to keep him informed which I did every step of the way. Once I had all the figures I requested only $2341. Rodney said he met with Tim the owner and that he agreed to pay my requested amount and that they would get me a check. I called every couple days for a month and was told everything it would be sent the next day. On 9-18 Rodney told me the last check that was mailed to me from Grass Valley must have been lost and he would get a new one cut and he would overnight it to me via UPS. I did not get a check on Friday as promised, no check Saturday or Monday. I texted Rodney multiple times asking for the tracking number and he said he would get me the tracking number which he never did since there was never a check sent. Today 9-30 I called the accounts payable person to ask if there was a check cut for me and she said no there was never a check cut for me and she then got Tim the owner on the phone who said this was the first time ever he had heard of this. Tim claimed that the damage was done after I left their lot which is not true and my relative can confirm this. Tim the owner only agreed to pay me $500 which I declined. I was sold a very unsafe vehicle that should have been inspected that I paid $500! For and lied to countless times. I have text messages and emails that I will gladly share.
