Lost another water heater cover

For the second time in 6 years, we lost a water heater cover yesterday. I learned the hard way that if you leave the motorhome at the service shop, they like to put the keys behind the water heater cover and sometimes don't close it properly. When we took a day trip yesterday after getting the mh back, I allowed someone to distract me from the checklist and I missed checking the cover. Now I am waiting on a new one to arrive and will have to get it painted to try to match the full body paint.

Do any of you mechanical geniuses out there have a good way to lock the water heater cover on? I thought of a key chain through the hole, but I am afraid it will bounce around and nick the paint. Any thoughts?

Another reason I don't take my rig in for service. Been RV'ing since 1957 and have yet to lose a refer, or water heater access panel. Good thing too as it gets expensive if you have to have them painted!
