Low clearances
Does anyone know the best source for finding out clearance heights on roadways? I know the major roadways seem to be good for truckers and assume they are OK for my 13 foot high rig. It's the secondary roads and back roads I'm interested in finding answers to. Thanks much. Safe travels.

I like the "mapoverlays" at this site
http://www.discoveryowners.com/
The files are like the POI factory but they are variable by the height you choose. We use Delorme's Street Atlas and adding the files is easy.
Actually, I'm less worried about published heights than I am unpublished tree limbs. Many small towns don't adhere to a 14' clearance standard and if they don't get many OTR trucks going through, the branches are really low. While I agree that they won't do as much damage as going under a stone bridge that is too low, a low hanging limb will take out an a roof A/C, too.

I do not believe that the information on published written pages are current and up-to-date. Rand McNaly ad other documents are very nice to have and are a great asset in planning, but the information is only as good as it was given when the document went to press.
I personally prefer the America's Independent Truckers Association, Inc. web site for low clearances. When I'm traveling and planning it is easy to go to the web site and see the information for the highway I am on. Then I keep looking for an 18 wheeler headed in my direction, or follow one. I figure if they are on the road it has to be okay for me. Then, I also watch very carefully for any YELLOW warning sign on the highway that indicated low clearance or other hazards.
Happy trails.

Bridges and like low-clearance obstructions are not built every day. Hence, a recent printed book - especially one that is continually verified and relied on by truckers - like a truckers road atlas will be accurate information.
Also, as chasfm11 said, the biggest problem areas are "main street, AnySmallTown, USA" because they seldom trim their trees. Hence, I'm driving the center line in most main street small towns because of this.

I disagree that books are more up to date than a well maintained web site. However, I would not put 100% trust in either. That is why the yellow warning sings are posted. I just hope that if in the last few days there has been re-surfacing of the roadway that the sign reflects any change in inches. Of course that only applies in real tight clearances for a specific vehicle. The surest way is to park it and wait for someone higher to come through. (lol)

Never trust the height signs either.
Last year I went home on a Friday stayed home all weekend and when I went to work on Monday something was different. Tuesday it dawned on me, a height sign for the bridge, no paving and I know (well pretty sure) they did not lower the bridge. The same bridge they raised the deck on 3 years prior. See the footers are not in solid ground...
