Montana Motor Home Registration

I just received my license renewal notice for my coach and was shocked to see my registration fee went from the usual $200 +/- to almost $1000. In reading the fine print, I see the money grabbing legislature decided it was a good idea to charge a "luxury tax" on all motor homes registered in Montana. If you are registered here, Montana, and if your rig is less that 10 years old and had an MSRP of $300,000 or more, you are allowed to pay a luxury tax of $800. Thankfully I kept my original MSRP paper that shows an MSRP of just under $300,000 so I might be spared the $800 tax. I doubt this will make the Montana LLC folks very happy. The "luxury tax" also applies to light vehicles with an MSRP over $150,00. This tax will be $825.In addition to the above money grab, they will asses a 3% "administrative fee" to all MVD transactions. There is no explanation at to what a "light vehicle" might be as to GVW, but details can be viewed at dojmt.gov/mvd-admin-fee.

Even at the $1,200 you'll have to pay that's a thousand dollars less than what it costs me here in Calif.

In Ct a person would have to pay 22+k to register plus another 5 to 6 k in property taxes each year. But the annual fee for registration is only a few hundred per year...

Think somewhere in the fine print you can, after some amount of time get permanent tags for much less.

Just a thought.

It's really no surprise at all to see the revenue generators go after a large group of people buying six figure toys that use every possible angle to avoid paying taxes and fees.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

In Michigan it cost me $1000 a year for license plates on a 25 year old American Eagle that is worth about $20,000 today. Only saving grace is that I can buy a one month or a two month plate.

Here in Washington the plates for my $750,000 (2009 MSRP) CC cost me less than $130 but then we have an almost 10% sales/use tax.
There were threads about the new $800 luxury tax some time ago on the forum.

Every state has their own way of raising revenue. In Montana, you don't pay sales tax on the MH purchase. In WI my registration is about $130/year. However, I paid a 5.5% sales tax when I bought it. In AZ, had I registered it at our winter home, I would have paid $2750 the first year plus over 7% sales tax. They're going to get their money somewhere.

I guess in some of the states mentioned, I could not even own an RV. MN, in my county, costs 7.375% sales tax on the NET transaction (sale price less trade-in) then annual registration varies based on actual weight of the vehicle on the road....on mine it's around $190/yr.
