We also have a 2000 Dutch Star. And rather than purchasing another coach, we did an interior remodel, and full body paint. Every time we looked at newer coach's we found that the quality of the build was lacking for our tastes.

I know how you feel re how our Dutch Stars are made. That is why we have returned to Newmar and the Ventana. The Dutch Star is now out of our price range.

We went from a 36 foot to a 40....wish we had not! The extra floor space is not worth the hassle of the extra turning radius while driving, and yes, we have had to forgo some parks as they could not accommodate that extra 4 feet...(neither will our driveway at the house!) Would go back to a 36 foot in a heart beat.

IMO, for your case comparing those two DP's, the overall length is nearly insignificant. As others have already mentioned I think the wheel base and front wheel cut are going to be the factors that make a difference you would notice in tight quarter handling. Longer wheelbase = larger turning radius. Higher wheel cut = shorter turning radius. Compare the specs of the two coaches, the new 40 may have a much better wheel cut.

That said, even assuming the 40 has a longer wheelbase and the same wheel cut I doubt it would be a problem for you. We went thru something similar with our current coach. Went from a 39 to a 42 tag both with a 55 wheel cut and I was a bit worried about the 2' longer wheelbase. Even though I do notice I can't turn quite as tightly as before, it is in fact a non issue and we have no problem getting into the same places we got into before including all our favorite state parks.

For many other reasons our 2013 42 is MUCH easier and pleasant to drive than our 2006 39 freightliner.
