My comment wasn't based on the ability to enforce, but rather the legality of it. Traditionally anything that involves interstate commerce is exempt from certain taxes. For example, semi-tractors are exempt from sales tax because of the interstate rules. The same can be true of aircraft. I would agree that if the taxes are ruled to be legal, then enforcement would be easy to do and costly for those of us who drive a lot of miles.

Yea Oregon is testing a pilot program on taxing by the mile. CMV (Commercial Motor Vehicles) are exempt.

Motorhome Personal Property Tax
Indiana no longer has a personal property tax on RV's. We pay an excise tax when we buy the plates. The tax is based on age and original cost. My 97 Bounder tax was $55 this year.

Seems to me, the better question is, why live in these states/countys that charge these rediculous fees. We live in Florida and recently looked into purchasing a home in
NC. After learning of all the tax's on a New RV, we decided not to purchase in NC.
Now think of all the loss of income with just one person not buying in these high tax states.

I have two choices on where to move this coming summer. either florida or texas. in ny I paid eight and three quarters for sales tax on my motor home. I believe they got enough out of me. from my understanding in florida if I register there there is a one time fee, and after that it is the yearly registration fee am I correct?

I can tell you about Texas. The average 26,000+ pound MH costs around $350 a year to register. If you have pad your sales tax in another state, I don't believe they tax you again. (someone help on that.)
Found the fees page:
Vehicles 10,001 lbs. or more will pay the following registration fee*, plus applicable and local county fees
10,001-18,000 lbs. $110.00
18,001-25,999 lbs. $205.00
26,000-40,000 lbs. $340.00
40,001-54,999 lbs. $535.00
55,000-70,000 lbs. $740.00
70,001-80,000 lbs. $840.00
Over 80,000 lbs. Varies
*Does not include diesel fees for commercial vehicles.
Here is some information on the Texas motor vehicle use tax Information. Gibberish to me.

In VA, yes, if done as the OP did. VA PPT is paid in the location where the vehicle is "garaged." For example, my boat was slipped at a marina in one county where boats happened to be exempt from PPT, but I lived in another county, so the boat was "garaged" legally elsewhere. I wasn't trying to avoid or evade the tax as my domicile county didn't have any navigable water, anyway. But, if the OP merely said his RV was garaged in one county yet it was normally physically located, say, behind his house, his domicile county would have every right to tax his RV. Keep in mind these laws or codes are geographically different so it's important to know what applies to you.

Well, there's another wake up call. I hadn't even considered the cost to register our MADP. I wonder what else I have missed. At least we don't have a PPT.

Texas has a one-time new resident fee of $90 on any registered vehicle transfering from another state. No tax charged on such vehicles.

It's against the law in my state to license and register it in another state to avoid taxes if it is not your main residence. I would think there would be similar rules in other states?

Correct there is a one time registration fee. Yearly tag for the coach $100.00 or less.
