Nasty smell

Got up this morning to a nasty smell and a warm Dometic refrigerator. All the lights on the control panel were looking normal. Took the vent cover off the side of motor home and saw the dreaded yellow film around the bottom of the burner can with some nasty looking yellow jell like liquid under the burner can. Should I just bite the bullet and get a new refer or use my insurance with a large deductible to get this NDR1062 repaired? What would you do. 13 years old but worked great until today.

Oh My! This is one of the things I dread dealing with. My insurance company (Me) would just go buy a new fridge. Replacing it with a residential has crossed my mind but I'm not sure I want to go for the other added expense of Inverter, Batteries etc. so it would be a direct replacement. Nothing lasts forever.

Your refrigerant line has cracked. Dometic has a recall on 1997-2008 Dometic refrig. If it is showing yellow color by the burner turn your propane to the frig off or you could get a fire and burn your motorhome up.

If it were me I would go residential because I have room for 2 more batteries and we seldom stay without hook-ups. Plus everyone tells me they cool down much faster

RR frig is the only way to go. Had mine going on 3 years and it has been on the inverter all that time. Just turn off ice maker when on the road and dry camping. We have 4 (6v batteries) and they will last around 10hrs, when they get down to 12.2v then start the gen set for 2hrs.

I installed a residential fridge with extra batteries and inverter in my 1991 Holiday Rambler and have worshiped it since day 1. Then I updated to a 2000 Newmar and the one thing I really miss is my residential fridge. However, the Dometic RV fridge in my Newmar is only 2 years old and they had to remove a window to install it, so I'll probably just live with it.

What kind of insurance do you have that covers a refrigerator failure?

Most would call it "extended warranty"...

Depending on the money saved, that could be considered to be "near".

Maybe it's time for a road trip!!

When my Dometic died I told my ESP I wanted a residential. They said go for it. One of the best mods we've ever done.

Hi Arch, we have an extended service plan thru Good SAMs. 500$ deductible. Covers most of my motor home items, engine, chassis and such.

Thanks for the generous offer. We only have a single door Dometic.
Summer in Northern Idaho.
