Gmc transmission rebuild shop in sw Florida

My tranny has bit the dust. Can anyone recommend a transmission rebuild shop in southwest Florida? Preferably in the Tampa to Fort Myers area. Thank to all who reply.

Transmission is a 4 speed 4L85E in a 2005 Airstream Land Yacht 30 m/h with a V8 8.1L engine.

Cannot engage reverse gear. Engine just revs when placed in reverse.

Looking to have transmission rebuilt since it only has 55k miles but will replace as a last resort.

I would highly recommend a re-man unit from Jasper Engines and Transmissions. They have several updates which they perform while rebuilding their transmissions, have a good warranty and the warranty is nationwide.

I concur with the Jasper. But first, I would get under that thing and make sure it was shifting into reverse where controls go into the tranny.

You have a 8.1 L General Motors Engine. I'm assuming that the 4 speed 4L85E transmission is not an Allison? Maybe that does not matter. I had a Allison 1000 transmission fail on my Workhorse chassis motorhome some years ago. The coach was towed to a Detroit Diesel/Allison transmission shop in Ocala, Fl. They put a rebuilt transmission in my coach and did a very good job. There is a Detroit Diesel/Allison shop in Tampa. Maybe they can help.

I'm sure you don't have a linkage issue. When you pull the shift selector out of park you go to reverse. Then to neutral, drive 1, drive 2 and low. If all the other positions work normally the linkage is fine.
The fluid could be fine looking and still have an internal problem. A broken sprag clutch could cause your problem. These can break without warning and no slipping. Bad looking fluid is caused from slipping clutches which overheats the fluid. The burnt clutch facing also discolors the fluid.

Correct.

But, some cases the tranny may not provide the park action and that is via an external device on some gas rigs and brake on diesel.

Ours rests in neutral and goes one way to reverse and the other for drive.

I doubt it is linkage but it is cheap and easy to check.

It could be possible that a detent could cause it to go just past reverse and be in neutral while indicating reverse.

If this is case drive would be just past which would be still drive but limited.

Just something to check.

Broken rear band, very common. Sprag/roller clutchs have nothing to do with reverse.
