What chassis, engine and tranny combo do you have? You may want to move post to one of those forums for better help.

I would try to stop by a shop like a RV dealer or a truck service shop. They might be able to pull a code from the computer.

I know on cars a faulty coolant sensor will keep the top gear locked out.

Again bringing it to a shop will be your best bet.

This is what you have to choose from with the 95 Vectra series, so the apples need to be separated from the oranges and bananas before proceeding and you might try running the vin number for beginners.

However, if your engine is in the front and you crawl down under and see coil springs on the front, you have a Chev. P30 chassis and a 454 cu in. V8 engine. If you see a solid front axle, you have a Ford 460 cu in V8 engine and very doubtful it's a rare Chev. P12. With the Diesel, the engine will be in the rear and most likely made by Cummings. The DP will be a much different animal in comparison to a Chev. or Ford gas model.

You should be able to stop by a chevy dealer to get the code read.

My thoughts exactly and a medium truck dealer would be best. However if you had room in the parking lot, it wouldn't surprise me if an automotive parts store chain wouldn't do it for free.
You may also want to post your issue on Yahoo's P30 chassis forum for owner members with a similar problem.

If your friend has a code reader ,have him read the code and use google to get your diagnosis.I have a code reader and the software that came with it,
In my experience using google I have come up with a far better answer than the software will give you.

Common to that model was OBDII,basically that's what everything used in the mid 90s
