Need to sell a 42 DP for a friend

Had another thread earlier asking how to best do this and with all the good help here I've decided to go the consignment dealer route. Thanks to all for your input.

It's a 2007 Navigator with Detroit diesel I have ALL the papers since new.

The question now is how to find an honest one!

I need to do this in the Los Angeles area. I could go as far as Orange County but seeing as how his wife is home bound this needs to be done as close to the San Fernando Valley as possible.

Do any of you have a recommendation of a firm you have personal knowledge of in the area?

Thanks

Give Tom Lindstrom a call and see if he will take it. He is the owner and is an honest, decent guy, with integrity. His place is in Moorpark, he only sells new Newmars and what he takes in on trade(if they are nice) or consignments. You can go to Tom Lindstrom RV and get all his info.

Just looked at where Lindstrom is and if it works out that would be a great close by place. We'll look into it Thanks!
Any other ideas folks?

You might also talk with Simi RV.

Over the past few years, we know two parties who have used them for consignment and were very happy. One had a motorhome and the other had a 5th wheel. The diesel pusher sold in about two weeks which is very good. They told us that there was no hassle when negotiating for the agreed upon net amount and they received it without any negotiation at the end. That's a good sign that the dealer has a good grasp on determining the market value.

They have a relatively good reputation for an RV dealership. They also have good traffic through their sales lot and have a good inventory ...something that should be kept in mind when choosing a consignment dealer.

I personally haven't used them for anything so I can't give you a first-hand experience just what I've heard. But like I say, they seem to have good reviews on sites such as Yelp and Google.

Take a look at their consignment webpage and it wouldn't hurt to give them a call too just to get a feel of their attitude and opinion of the coach your friend is trying to sell. Contact Jeff Aloia at (805) 522-1221

.

Edited to add: I noticed that they claim that they do not have any hidden costs or additional fees. That is something to be aware of when shopping for a consignment dealer. When I was looking for a dealer to consign my DP, I interviewed about a dozen and more than half of them had various extraneous fees such as detailing fees, initial inspection fee, mechanical inspection fee, documentation fee, etc. ...so make sure that the dealer you choose does not charge ANY fees whatsoever. There should just be one figure that is negotiated and that is the "net amount you receive once the unit is sold" and no other fees or charges should be in the mix AT ALL. The only other negotiated item if needed at all would be the price to fix any items that may be necessary to floor and show the unit ...i.e., if there's a big gash in the flooring that is really noticeable that could be a distraction when showing the coach that would need to be fixed, etc.

I will check out both places this week as I will be in LA with the family Tuesday afternoon.
I really appreciate all the good information coming in.

Here's a question- I "presume" on a consignment sale the dealer does all the qualification and vetting of the buyer and are there rules or limits to how much the rig is driven while on consignment? I guess these could all be questions to ask before consignment.

That should be correct. I consigned a MH for sale and I never had to anything except agree to the final price and sign over the title. The dealer should tell you how much you will get after they take their %.

My brother-in-law purchased his last coach through Tom Lindstrom. Nice fair guy. I'd talk to him first.

California Coach Company

These guys were highly recommended 4-5 years ago when I was research for our purchase. I believe a gent named Steve (can't recall his last name) was the person I was pointed to by several IRV2 and RV.Net board members. (I was looking for a Professional to help me locate a coach.). I did go visit the place, missed meeting Steve, and liked what I saw.

Another option, is to contact Premier in Oregon, and see if they would be willing to handle the sell for you. They would probably arrange transportation to their facility.

Both of these places have good reputations, and only focus on resale - no new sales.

That is a good coach, and if anything is in need of repair and or replacement, I'd suggest this be done before the attempt to sale. I also like the idea of the person doing the sale, agreeing to refund a buyer for Inspection and Oil/Trans fluid analysis. This shows they are not afraid of the condition of their rig.

That coach, is in the upper tier - so you are competing with other top level coaches. Condition makes a difference.

Price it right to move, as too often I see unrealistic asking prices on the higher end (actually, most levels) - many people will keep on looking if the asking price is not reasonable.

Best of luck to you on helping out!
Smitty

I really think once you talk to Tom Lindstrom all your questions and worry will be handled. Tom has a small dealership but moves things very quickly. He is one of Newmar's top 10 dealers in the US, most of that due to his knowledge, integrity, and honesty. He will treat you right and if it is not something he wants to handle he will give you good recommendations. If it is in decent condition he will most likely take it. When we bought ours from him, there were three used ones we test drove, all in great condition, but decided to buy a new Newmar. When we came back a week later to pick ours up, he had sold the three we test drove. People really trust him and buy from him, you will feel the same when you meet or talk to him.
