In looking at the New DP market right now, I am seeing some 2011 43' Monaco Diplomats still on the lots that are selling for considerably less that the 2012 40' ones we are looking at. The 43' ones have tag axes so better weight and more room. California requires a special license for driving something over 40', so longer than that wasn't previously on our list. It may be why they are still several left on the lot. The dealer seems motivated to move them.

Do you think that we should consider the longer than 40' units? I'm trying to gather the importance of the various factors in a purchasing decision. So any thoughts on length, price, older new, tags is welcome.

The big difference I found between a 40' non tag Dutch Star and 43 Tag Dutch Star was the power to weight ratio. They both had the 400HP Cummins. We live in the mountains and the 40' sprinted up the mountain passes where as the 43' was far slower. The 43' however had a far smoother ride.

It is generally considered that coaches with tag axles handle better than coaches without. You need to test drive one of each to determine which you want. Tag axles do reduce the amount of basement storage. That's about the only negative I can think of.

Generally, coaches with tag axles provide a significant increase in cargo carrying capacity. It is surprisingly easy to overload some single axle coaches. Hard to do with a tag axle coach.
