New batteries, still showing low voltage on chassis...

I replaced all four batteries today with new Interstate batteries, house and chassis. 2011 Winnebago Journey Express 39, Cummins 340 hp, 6.7L.

Started vehicle, chassis batteries showed about 12.4 initially. The vehicle goes into higher idle when chassis batteries are below 13.4, which it did. Started generator, voltage increased slightly. Turned off engine and got charge up to 13.9 with generator running. Started engine and dropped to about 12.4. I'm hoping after I drive it batteries will stay >13.4 volts, otherwise I suppose I'm looking at an alternator issue? House batteries appear fine with charge >13.4 volts.

Haven't driven it with the new batteries yet, just started it and idled so far. Will drive it tomorrow.

Fully charged 12-volt batttries won't have >13.4 volts, unless they have a charger on them. ~12.8 volts is fully charged with no load and no charger attached (may vary a bit depending on ambient temperature).

The voltage you're reading with the generator running is coming from your converter or inverter. When the the charger sees full charge, it should go into a float charge mode of ~13.4 volts. If you turn off the charger, you should see ~12.8 volts.

Don't know what you expect from a 12v battery but all mine stay at a happy 12.5v. Charging rate on engine alternator or inverter charger is about 13.5 but staticly they stay at 12.5.. I think yours are fine. To maintain a 13.4v static state you'd have to charge at about a 15v rate which would boil the batteries.

Just got the "low battery voltage". message on drivers display and engine at idle 'steps up' rpm's to about 2500 max to charge the chassis batteries. So, it's not what "I expect", apparently it's what the engine expects!

Thanks friends for your input. I'll drive it tomorrow and update then.

Cheers!

Thanks, Guys. Some good info there that I didn't know, esp. re: voltage shown while genny running vs. not. Ran it for a while and no problems, Not sure why I got the message "voltage less than 13.4, auto idle increased, min voltage 13.4", but it didn't come on today.

Took you two months to save-up for that expensive alternator!
I'm saving-up for tires...it'll take me 18 months.
