New "Heavy Vehicle Impact Fee" For RV's Registered In GA, Effective 7-1-15
For RV's registered in Georgia, just a quick "heads up" that depending on your weight, there is a new heavy vehicle impact fee that will be imposed on registrations after 7/1/15:
For Vehicles 15,500 to 26,000 lbs: $50.00
For Vehicles 26,001 and above: $100.00
This was included in the transportation bill which passed the Georgia Assembly on 3/31/15.
Here's a link to the bill: http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/20152016/153458.pdf

Physics says heavier vehicles will do more damage to roads than lighter ones. So the fee would make sense for RVs if you drove them the same number of miles a car is driven. For most of us I'll be that is not even close to the situation. And an RV isn't on the road anywhere as much as a commercial truck.

Absolutely. There should have been an exception for recreational vehicles. I certainly will give my state legislators my 2cents. Needs an amendment .

That doesn't suck as bad as it does here in Florida. We pay an inpact fee of $250.00 for any vehicle regestered. 1st time only, tags can be transfered after that with no impact fee.

Our Magna weighs just over 50,000#'s (GVWR is 54,000). Here in WA they also go by weight on a yearly basis. I paid the 8.4% use tax and all the transfer fees at once so I don't remember what the weight fee was. I DO remember what the use tax was though!

Since you live in GA you know that the legislature has adjourned for the session, therefore it will be January before any changes could potentially be made.

Not many years ago it was only $100. That is what I paid.
But the yearly $59.72 I pay for MH plates is much lower then the same fee in other states.
INITIAL REGISTRATION FEE
Imposed upon the initial application for registration of private automobiles, trucks 5,000 lbs. or less and motor homes.
The $225.00 Initial Registration Fee:

I will not make a political comment.
But I do thank the O/P..I have been considering a change of official residence and Georgia WAS on the list of states I was considering.

Tjhanks. In the end it doesn't make much difference financially since I only pay $35 per year registration, it's just the point of it; being unfair IMO.
Cheers!

I'm not a lawyer, but I do believe that the words "certain heavy vehicles" in the new Code Section 40-2-151, refers to commercial vehicles.
Not for non-commercial vehicles, or non-commercial motorhomes.

The weight fee in WA for the Magna was $75 and then other fees so it came to $179 not including the use tax. Next year it should be a little less as there were some first year fees added.
Back in 2000 when we had out '98 Santara the yearly license fee was OVER $2,400 on a two year old rig that sticker price was only 98,000! There was a referendum in there that cut the fees way down. If it was still in effect we would still have the Santara.
