Newbie, looking at buying a Fleetwood Bounder

Hey I'm new here and really impressed with this site, looks like alot of great information and knowledge.

I'm looking at buying a 2001 Fleetwood Bounder 33R. This is my first motorhome, so any suggestions will be very appreciated. I've been looking for awhile now and this is my favorite one we've walked through. Two slide outs, new carpet and flooring. It looks just about new for a 2001.

What do you guys think: 2001 Fleetwood Bounder with 2 Slides | Recreation RV Sales

Thanks -Zach

Looks Good to Me

Hi, Newbie!

I'd be concerned about the "New Carpet".....what's under it?

Other than that, you should be happy with a Fleetwood........

Well, I'm a fan of Fleetwood Bounder, so I'm a bit biased. From the photos, that looks like a great rig for the money. Also, I think the new carpet is GREAT. Many times a previously owned unit has nasty looking carpet, so this way you'll know that it doesn't have crud lurking in it, plus that's one less thing you'll have to re-do yourself.

Have you driven it, and do all the appliances, slides, generator, etc. work? How old are the tires? How many miles does it have on the odo? Good luck with your choice.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Hello Zach, and welcome aboard..........Nice coach!
Our first coach was a 90 bounder and we loved it! It got my wife and I started and we now have an 05 Southwind.
Any reason given for the new carpet and flooring other than change? From the pics it does look good.

I normally warn new folks to watch the pricing as they are all over the place. I did a nationwide search on RVTrader for 2001 Bounder and the low was $27k and the high was $44k, so this is a competitive price.
Best of luck!

Ditto to what Sarah said. You can't go wrong with a Bounder. Inspect it good or have someone else do it prior to purchase. Also check out comparables to see if it's priced correctly.

If your looking at a new unit, might want to looks at one with title floor. Carpet they use in most motorhomes is cheap and you will be replacing it down the road. We have a Forest River Berkshire and easy to sweep and mops the floor. not sure how many gas motorhomes come with title option due to weight. best of luck.

Howdy and welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy the site. Our previous motorhome was a Fleetwood Bounder 32H. Don't think you can go wrong and it's a very popular model. We enjoyed ours very much. Hope you enjoy the shopping experience and find the one that suit you the best. Good Luck!
I almost forgot, the one you're looking at looks great.

You'll like the Bounder. The price for this one seems very good.

Some things to consider with the Ford F53 chassis:

Engine. The motor has aluminum heads. Improperly torquing the spark plugs can easily damage the threads and cause the plugs to blow out. Later engines (2004 and up?) added more threads, but that brought it's own problems.

Exhaust manifold: Exhaust manifold bolts, particularly near the right rear, have been known to snap their heads off.

Intake: The V10 will suck enough water on a really rainy day that it'll soak the water filter to the point that the engine starts to miss. Ford has been through two factory mods to the intake tube with varying degrees of success. There is also a 'dryer hose' mod that seems to work for some folks, but I could never get it to work as others have. I had to change my filter once on the side of the road in Utah during a particularly heavy snowstorm and three times in the span of a couple of hours several days in a row while traveling through Montana. Each time I changed the filter, I'd also have to empty a good cup of collected water from the bottom of the housing too. I believe the little bowl at the bottom of the filter housing is just for that purpose. To be safe I recommend carrying at least two spare filters.

Despite the dire sounding issues, they can be easily managed with proper knowledge. They did not stop me from buying my V10 Bounder. We did an 8,600 mile cross country trip in two months last year and except for the rather inconvenient air filter episodes, the only breakdown we had was with the tow dolly. The Bounder performed excellently.

We purchased our first Bounder & Fleetwood product this past summer and have had no issues. Do you research on that model year and prices. Inspect the coach and if happy with it --- GO for it !

Sounds like I made a good choice then! It's great to hear all you guys like the bounder. We put a deposit on it to hold it.

There are a few minor things that need to be done, but nothing major. Few new blinds...etc. The carpet was replaced because the old carpet was just low quality and worn. The new carpet and wood flooring is nice.

The outside is in really good shape for a 2001(came from California). I started the coach and it seemed to run really well, so hopefully I don't run into these spark plug issues said above. After reading I thought that issue was only like 1999 and older? I could be wrong though.

I crawled under the coach and there are no leaks, and really almost no rust on the chassis. As for the rain water issue I appreciate the info on that, I was considering buying a k&n drop in filter for it.

Any other small things I should know? Anything I can do to avoid having the spark plug problems? Keep them coming.

Good luck with the unit. I just purchased my first Bounder a couple of month's ago, first trip this weekend. Bounder has been around for a while, from the posts it looks like a good reliable rig.

Hope you love it! (And speaking of leaks, be sure to take a good look all around the inside (ceilings, walls, slide outs, and around roof fixtures) for any signs of water leaks. Make sure the roof sealant is in good shape.
