Newbies Tee, Gee & Bucc The Wonderdog

Hello,

My wife and I recently purchased our first RV, it is a beautiful 2004 41 ft Dutchstar diesel pusher that we love. We purchased it from a great couple in Utah and so far this has been a great deal of fun. We have learned a great deal from visiting this site so we decided to join and take our shot at asking a few dumb questions. First dumb question is what does DW stand for? Second question is are any of you familiar with the complete process of obtaining the Non-Commercial Class B License you need to drive a 40 ft or large RV in California? I am particularly interested in the field portion of this test and what they ask you do.

We are also planning this week to purchase tires for our coach and we are trying to make a decision on which brand to choose. We are not yet lucky enough to be retired so we want to buy a quality tire for a decent price. We will not put the miles on the unit over the next six years to justify the purchase of Goodyear or Michelin tires. We are currently considering Sumitomo, Toyo, Firestone or Hankook and we would like to know what you good folks think about these brands for use on RVs. We need six 275/70 R 22.5 and we would like to know of any good locations where a good deal might be found in Southern California. I have found prices ranging from 2800.00 to 3500.00 so any help would be appreciated.

We look forward to being a part of this group and we thank all of you in advance for any answers and input.

"DW"=Dear Wife
I just purchased the 22.5 Firestones for our DP and have about 500 miles on them with no problems. I had Goodyears before but too expensive now. Seems like I paid about 2800.00 for six out the door total. Hope this helps.

Welcome to irv2.
Congrats on your new DS many safe and happy miles for you.
Here is a thread on tires found in Newmar Quick Tips that may help.
My Michelin's are now 10 years and in the process of new tires also.
All three coach's I had Michelin's maybe expensive but have always had good wear with them and never a blow out that others always claim.
As long as proper weights and tire inflation is provide should not have a problem.
Come on down as Dealers always say and join us in the Newmar Forum.

Since you're left-coasters, I'd strongly recommend Les Schwab. We've had great service from our local franchises for over 30 years. We put 6 Toyos on our RV when we first got it. They're 19.5 size, so if you have bigger wheels, they'll be more.

We got all 6 tires, new stainless steel valve stems and a front end alignment for $2300. Without me even asking, the shop manager searched the warehouse database and found 6 tires with a manufacturing date only 6 weeks before I bought them.

I've no financial stake in Les Schwab, just a long-time satisfied customer.

A couple of days ago I saw that Costco has (had?) a sale on Michelins specifically for RVs. That might be worth investigating!
