No crank when key turned to start position '07 Fleetwood Revolution

2007 fleetwood revolution with cat c-9..when key turned to start there is no starter engagement..batteries are good,,,I am able to crank "hot wiring the pre solinoid momentarily...suspect a compromise in the wiring from key switch to solinoid..ideas or wiring diagram would help.

Welcome to the forum. Don't know much about your MH model, but we had a similar event happen to us a couple years ago. If you have a shift lever/handle and not a push button, try moving the shift lever back and forth to assure that it is in neutral. There is a neutral positioning switch and if it isn't engaged you will not be able to start even though every thing appears to be OK.

Hope this helps in not someone will chime in with more knowledge than me and let us know what you find.

In addition to the neutral switch or signal from the shifter, does it have a safety interlock to prevent starting with jacks down or slides out? They could be out of adjustment or not functioning if so equipped. Also it's not uncommon for the ignition switch to go bad since they have so many extra functions built in besides simple ignition and start.

I too have a older and a gas unit but I have a emergency start button I can push if need be. Do you have one and will it start using that feature?

If it cranks by jumping the solenoid then its prob one of the start interlocks. check netural safety by shifting trans into d then r then n to get it centered again. check jacks and slides to be sure everything is up and in. mine will start with the jacks down but raises them but will not start with a slide out. just dbl check everything.

Your emergency start probably just cross connects house and chassis batteries, it doesn't actually crank the starter, does it?

rlund1 was able to get the starter to crank by hot wiring, thus showing he has enough 'oomph' in the chassis batteries.

By the way, rlund1,

No but you have to hold the button down before turning the key. Turn Key and starter engages.
I had to use it this yesterday morning below zero Dead battery so I used the button and got her to start (a little hard). I forgot to put in a couple of bottles of Iso. So I ran it for a good 1/2 hour I need a new battery.

This sounds like a problem I had. The problem was the key switch itself. My Cummins dealer replaced the switch and the problem went away.

Good Luck!

I vote for a bad Neutral safety switch. Which is actually in the transmission in my rig. You might have the wiring and any connectors checked back to the tranni.

If the ignition switch is in the dashboard instead of on the steering column, you should be able to access the wires on the back of it. By checking for 12 v on the wire that goes to the starter solenoid, not the ignition, you can discover if the problem is in the switch or the circuit and other safety cut outs. I sort of cringed at the idea of having Cummins do the work, I replaced my ignition switch with a trip to Autozone and about 15 minutes. Exact replacement, even able to switch out lock portion to retain same key. $20. Pull the old one, (if it tests bad) take to parts store, and replace. Very simple.

thank you for all the replies and help so far..nope it isnt the ignition switch cause I have run a new wire from it to the pre start solinoid so I can start the engine from the "cockpit" However with this set up I do not have neutral start protection.

I think the neutral start safety switch being bad is a very good suggestion. It should be easy to check that. Find the switch disconnect the cable to it. If the wiring harness end has the female plug take a paperclip and jumper across the pins in the wiring harness then try to start it. If it is the male end in the wiring harness use a jumper lead. If it starts replace the switch. If it does not start then try to get a wiring diagram or talk to the factory and see what interlocks such as slides, jacks, etc keep the engine from starting.

no crank when key turned

We experienced the same thing after fueling last summer with our Tiffin Allegro Red. After checking batteries and connections, I called Freightliner.
Their tech immediately identified the problem. Cummins-Allison combination sometimes thinks the transmission is in a gear other than neutral.
SOLUTION: 1. Set parking brake. 2. Foot off service brake. 3. ignition on.
4. Press transmission buttons in order "N-D-N-R-N. 5. Start engine.
I wish I had called Freightliner first. I spent more than two hours at the fuel pump trying to identify the problem.

Good luck!

the nuetral safety switch would be my guess as well..if I ever buy another new motorhome and I cannot get every wiring diagram for coach chassis and engine the deal would be off. Once again thank you for the replies
