I would call the dmv in the state where you bought the mh. I had problems when I b ought mine from a small dealer in Florida. Said he FedExed the title to the bank, he lied. He mailed it and it got losr. Filed complaint with DMV, and they gave him 10 days to produce a title. He provided a duplicate title. Happy ending. Bought in April, got title in June.

Thanks for the input. I will try a few of the suggestions. Unfortunately the bank was in California and the MH was in North Carolina and since no dealer involved, the process was even harder. The seller stated that in North Carolina, they only have 7 days to turn in their license plate once they have sold the unit and cancelled their insurance. They barely let us drive back to South Dakota with it. Unfortunately, he is not returning our calls now so I guess it is up to me to track it down. We so want to be using R'Bus. Guess we'll be camping in the driveway again this weekend.

I was in your shoes last summer. All I can tell you is it will all work out and this period of your ownership will soon be little more than a fading memory.

Try the temporary license route suggested, I am glad it was mentioned. Best of both worlds, you can use your RV and wait out the time it takes to get the completed title. Most states have such a license. I get one every year to move from storage to my home legally;cost is minimal. Even a three day temp would get you a nice weekend out.

When we bought our last mh the dealer took six weeks to get us a title. We finally got tired of waiting and made an appointment to pick it up. That morning, we got to the dealership and it's not ready. After an hours wait, a runner shows up, straight from the county clerks office, with the paperwork.

We learned later it was all about cash flow. The dealer was short of cash and was putting off getting out title and tags as long as possible so that he didn't have to fork over the sales tax, which we had already paid, to the governor.

You need to force the issue.

If you can't get a temp plate, and if there is any more delay, I suggest you call the Attorney General's Office in North Carolina and ask them what course to take. You really have no guarantee that the owner did not owe more than he could afford to pay to get the title released for a transfer, if I read your post correctly.

I've always gone by "it's easier to ask forgivness than permisssion.

Use the damned motohome. Enjoy it. the paperwork will catch up to you eventualy, and in the meantime, you could most likely drive a motorhome with expired temporary tags for months, maybe even years before being hasselled.

You do not have a problem. In NORTH CAROLINA if you have a bill of sell you have 30 days to apply for a tag.The catch is you must insure the vehicle immediately. That done you are fine to drive anywhere you want.Just show proof of insurance and bill of sale if you get stopped. Please be aware that you are still hoping that the seller will honor your deal. After 30 days the process must start over which means another trip for you.

I can't believe I might be able to help one of you. All these replies were great but if you are like me waiting is He**. Call DMV where it was registered, they will have the lienholder on record, using the VIN some DMV's will give you online info. Once you have the lienholder info call the bank/l.h., more than likely they haven't processed but often they make mistakes. Title may have gone back to their customer once loan was pd in full. They will usually remedy this asap. If not with bill of sale they may issue you proof lien satisfied and you could apply for duplicate. Ask @ DMV if with duplicate and proof of purchase you can bipass seller sign. as they aren't returning calls and private sale. At least this way you are doing something while taking the others advice and getting to know your new coach. GOOD LUCK hope all works out quickly.

I don't know if this is good advice, but that is how we handled it!
I agree with Larry. After a private sale, most states will let you drive a vehicle without a tag for several weeks as long as you have a bill of sale and proof of insurance. I sure wouldn't let lack of tag / registration keep you in the driveway. Call your DMV.

Thanks to all of you!!! DH went to the State Highway Patrol Office in SD and sure enough, they issued him a temporary license with the bill of sale that we had. We were able to enjoy a completely beautiful, out-0f-the-ordinary camping weekend in South Dakota. NEVER HAPPENS! Temps in the 70's, absolutely beautiful. Two of the grandkids with for the first night. We would not have thought to try this without all of you since our local county office didn't mention that as a possibility. Then, guess what??? To our surprise, the title arrived while we were gone and we express mailed it to the seller for signing and he promised to express it back to us for processing! We should have "real" plate by the time our 15-day temp license expires. Again, thanks to all of you! You are an awesome group and I hope we get to thank some of you personally some day.
