Norcold Fridge replacement

After having cooling issues with our 2003 Norcold 1200, I had our reputable RV repair shop pull the unit to replace with a Pines cooling unit. Got a call today that they would not recommend replacement as the "box" of the unit has swelled and is saturated with water, and is ruined. They said they have seen this several other times, when the unit ran for prolonged times and had excessive condensation. Cost for a new 1200 installed is about $4500.
Does anyone know of a cooling unit repair outfit that sells complete reconditioned units? Does anyone know if the current new units from Norcold or Dometic are more reliable than the older units. Hate to spend the big bucks if they still don't cool well, ours was marginal cooling in the lower area since we owned the Rv. thanks for any advice, B

You have a few options.

There are many RVer's who are removing the RV type fridge and replacing it with a residential, that's one option.

Another option is due to these conversions, there are a number of excellent used Norcold 1200 fridge boxes available for sale. If the cooling unit is not an Amish one replace it with an Amish unit which you had intended on doing earlier. I have even seen units for sale that had the Amish cooling units installed previously.

Check the classified here as I have seen fridges for sale there many times.

Do a search here. Most are replacing their Norcolds with residential refrigerators in the neighborhood of $1,100 plus installation. End of Norcold problems.

You're right Ernie. I meant that there are many excellent Norcold fridge BOXES for sale due to people converting to a residential fridge.

He can then install the Amish cooling unit like he originally intended on doing anyway.

I went back and corrected my statement.

Thanks for the advice, residential won't work for us, no room for extra batts and we boondock /primitive camp a lot. Last year I was researching the fridge issue and found a site for a place that would rehab your fridge, new door seals, paint racks etc, and was hoping to buy a unit with ni box trade-in. I will keep looking at classifieds, found a cooling unit repair co that has some of the changeout norcold units for a fair price, just hoped to not have to deal with the issue of OEM or replacement more than once. Any thoughts on the current units from Norcold? b

There isn't anything that Norcold makes that is worth 2 cents. Don't waste your money.

Leon from National RV in Shipshiwana rebuilds the Norcolds. He has a building full of the Norcolds. You mite want to call him and see if he will sell you a rebuilt one or can rebuild yours. He specializes in rebuilding the Norcold and Dometic refrigerators. He also fixes or replaces A/C units too. I am including a copy of his brochure

I sold two of the Norcold units on Craigslist last year and my friend sold his on Craigslist just last month. The boxes and doors were in excellent shape. They actually worked, but got tired of them never really working well. One sold for $400.00 and the other two sold for $500.00.

There out there, just have to catch one coming up for sale.

I disagree. We love our Norcold fridge and so do thousands of others. Works great! Awesome unit that was never subject to recall.

Everyone is entitled to their "opinion", but that's all it is - your opinion.

Cheers.
