Notice of Nonrenewal from American Modern Ins.

Received an interesting letter (registered BTW) from American Modern Insurance. It states they will not renew my policy when it expires. It goes on to state the reason:

"The reason for nonrenewable is our company (American Modern Insurance Group) recently decided to discontinue writing recreational vehicle business in the state of Maryland solely for business and economic reasons...."

FYI: I've never filed a claim or got a ticket.

Any body else with AMIG get something similar?

Just for kicks I went to their site and looked for RV coverage....pages are gone.

So, now I am insurance shopping again. Luckily I have until October.

Kathy

It doesn't matter that you never had a claim ( but will when you shop another Co. ). It's not uncommon for a Co. to stop insuring a class of business. Don't take it personal.

I have American Modern and have made a claim, but haven't received a letter yet. I'm in New Mexico but it's hard to imagine the state would matter.

Hi Kathy_MD,
Consider contacting a motor coach insurance broker. Go to RV Advantage | FCIS Insurance - RV Insurance, Motor Home Insurance, Travel Trailer Insurance and see if you want to contact them. My coaches have been insured with one of their companies for years.

Another vote for RV Advantage that Gary recommends above.

They are brokers and write for several companies. I found them quite easy and pleasant to deal with and they found me the lowest price for the best coverage.

Thanks Gary.
I have USAA for everything (Home, Auto, Motorcycle), but they don't cover Motorhomes. They (USAA) sent me to Progressive and they gave me a quote of $450 a year. Still shopping and thanks for the link to RV Advantage (I filled out the on-line forms and await their response).

Same here. Haven't had to make a claim or use the roadside (thankfully), so don't know how good they'll be, but feel their price is good.

Get it. I'm paying $713 a year with Allstate and I have everything else on it. Home, and two trucks.

Don't wait until your policy expires to find new insurance. One of the questions from a new company will be: Have you been denied insurance of have you been refused renewal"? If you answer yes, then you will be assessed at a higher rate.

Start now and find a new policy before yours expires, get it in place and then cancel the current policy before the expiration date. This way you are not lying and the rate will be better.

Ditto on getting a policy with another company now. Cancel the other when insured. That quote from Progressive was reasonable. Here in Florida, that quote would be double.

The state does matter a great deal. Cost of claims can vary greatly from state to state due to state regulations, driving records, and other factors. For example, there are many more claims per capita in highly populated states and fewer claims in more rural states (like New Mexico where you live). Some companies feel they can not compete under certain circumstances, so they stop writing policies for everyone in those states, not just for those who have had claims.

Also some Co's can't get rate increases and decide to leave that State.
