Off the lot or ordered
My wife and I were looking at an Fleetwood Storm and unfortunately the dealer we were working with tried to raise the price by a few thousand right before we signed the final paperwork. The deal fell through and we are back on the hunt. Will not be going back to that location ever again, but I know that is the car salesmen game.
We were looking at that coach only becuase it was a such a good price. It got us to thinking if we are going about this the right way. We have been approaching this from the stand-point of car sales. Look at all the lots, find a unit we like best and try to make a deal. We are finding coaches we like and will "settle" for, but nothing that has WOWed us.
To this point, we have worked under the assumption that if a dealer had to "order" a unit for us, the price would not be as good. Is that truly the case?

Now you will get the "sometimes" answer. A lot depends on how long the dealer has had it on his lot paying floorplan interest. It also depends if a certain model is moving fast and he can't keep one long. If you find one you really like get the dealers price and write down all of the options on it. Then send out a bid sheet contain exactly what you want and the options you want and see who gives you the lowest price to order the coach. Then check out reviews on that dealer before you call them. Most discount from MSRP a good percentage like Tiffin dealers who give somewhere around 25-27% discount. Based on what you find you can then either buy the one on the lot you liked or order it.

Depends, if the coach has been sitting there a long tone or last years model maybe a better deal. We looked and looked for a 2015 Sunstar 27n all over, including Lichsteins in Iowa. We finally ordered what we wanted and are still waiting, about 7 weeks so far, but will be here by April1. We shopped the Internet and local and finally our local dealer came within a $1000 of what I could have gotten out of state, which was the best deal and saved the traveling expenses. I looked at the percentage the dealers were willing to come down off the MSRP, eithe on the lot or ordered. Once I knew the max I could get % off it was the same if we ordered it or got it off the lot.

FreddieMac, that's kind of similar to "bait & switch" ! They think they've got you hooked, then raise the price!

If you can find one on the lot you want that's the way I would go, no long term waiting, wondering when your new RV is finally gonna show. Also you can check it out for problems before you put any money down. One from the factory sight unseen could come with a list of problems that make your wait even longer.

I'm on my third motorhome. Up to 60% off the original MSRP for last year's "still new" but unsold clearance inventory isn't unusual to find during a motorhome hunting expedition.
As for ordering, I have never limited my search to local dealerships. I have always shopped Nationally, and flown out and driven/camped my was back home to get the best deal for a new motorhome.

Just remember when buying used you could be buying someone else's lemon.
Late model used units are usually listed for more than you can buy a new model as list price can be discounted 25-30%

Did that, got the $750,000 Magna for less than half new sticker. Now have a $29,000 bill for the blown ISX 650 Cummins engine after only 3,000 miles. Can't blame the dealer, they had no way of knowing and we did get an oil analysis and it didn't show any problems either. You just never know with a used rig!

Plenty of nightmares with new rigs, also. Just search the forum for plenty of horror stories. Start with the guy trying to sue under the lemon law. What a mess.
Do your own DD and $AVE !

You may be right! I read a lot of stories on here about folks buying new MH's and spending months trying to get all the bugs out!

There'll always be the debate as to whether to buy NEW or USED - both have their pluses and their minuses. I personally prefer new as the mfr's warranty that comes with a new coach covers everything - the warranties you buy for used usually won't fix something like a cabinet door whose hinges stripped out, or similar things, or an air leak where road dust gets inside, that a new coach warranty will correct. But, you do pay for that...
One option I don't see is to go to a national motorhome Rally - like the FMCA Pomona Rally coming up next week in CA. There you can tour every brand possible, and they almost always have "show special" pricing or financing rates that you won't get anywhere. Fleetwood in particular used to offer various "games" to get additional thousands off that they (not the dealer) paid for AFTER you worked your best deal on a coach. You can get into the Pomona show on a daytime ticket that only allows you to go to the new coach show for $7.00 - if you're in the area or can fly there cheaply it's worth it - and sometimes they have used coaches too that someone just traded in for a new, at least on the last day.
