Old vs New alternator compatibility-Chevrolet?

I have a 1995 Southwind with a 7.4L 454L Chevrolet engine. My alternator needs replacement (one on coach is not original as it had to be replaced a few years on a road trip, so I am not interested in rebuilding it) and shop's first rebuilt alternator was "bad" (no details given). They offered me a choice of another rebuilt or they stated they found a new alternator and could have it shipped in but it was at a Workhorse former dealer (my chassis predates the sale of Chevrolet P3 chasses to Workhorse).
A friend said he recalled an issue in the wiring harness between older (mid-90s) alternators and "new" ones in terms of the wiring harness compatibility. Does anyone have any info on this potential issue?

I wouldn't buy new unless the cost difference was negligible. Having said that, if that's what you prefer, and the shop is supplying the labor, then let them sort it out. They're the supposed experts.

If the plan is to buy through them and then install yourself, then i'd rethink the process. I would bet that one of the local auto part stores would have the alternator. On top of that, i think even though it would be rebuilt, it would have a lifetime warranty if bought from a place like Autozone.
