Onan 4000 BGE Emerald Plus neat problem?

Gen runs fine for 30-40 mins under load (AC) then voltage drops out. Gen continues to run for a bit....eventually cuts out. After cool down can repeat the same. This is a barely used Onan Gen (160hrs) on a 91 Damon Ultrasport Escaper (70K miles). Tech line believes the Voltage Regulator is failing. Trying to figure out how to clean the thing first. Other ideas?
