Onan 5500 oil change
Planning to change oil in our generator today.
What I'm not sure of is how much you tighten a new filter when you go back to install it.
Do you use the wrench and tighten it slightly or is it only hand tightened?

Most oil filters will be labled " Tighten 3/4 of a turn after the gasket makes contact".
With a good grip, that should be hand tight. Sometimes you can't get a good grip and using the wrench is ok, just mark the can and only turn it 3/4 of a turn.

I just changed mine a few days ago.
I was able to remove the filter by hand with rubber grip gloves so I put it back on by hand. It wasn't leaking before and it doesn't leak now. It was probably about 3/4 turn.
The messy part was filling the oil. Has to go very slow or it runs over.

The first quart goes in fine, the second one requires something a little different. Fill it slowly until it is at the top. Put the plug back in and bump the starter. Take the plug out and you can add more up to the top of the fill tube. Put the plug back in and bump the starter again. After several times you will have both quarts in and no mess and it is a lot faster.

I found it best to put a Quart(it takes a while) in the filter, then 1 qt in the engine

Thank you!
My oil filter is very very tight. Can anyone confirm that if you're laying underneath the generator and looking up at it is left to stain it or write it in this instance which ways the seated?

Yes counterclockwise to loosen it if you're looking UP at it.
Of course don't stay there or you'll have an oil bath in your face.
Best regards,
W.D.
