Exclamation Onan Emerald III Genset No Start

I just recently purchased a 1989 Winnebago Chieftan Class A motorhome. Needs some minor work but for $1000 how could i pass it up. It has an Onan Emerald III Genset 110V generator in a belly compartment on the drivers rear. I was checking it out and when i pressed the start button all i got was a clanging noise like someone was ringing bells. Sounds to me like the starter is spinning but not fully engaging. I am a 15 yr automotive technician. Never got into small engine repair and i know nothing about Onan products except that they are the best manufactured. Can anyone plz help me on this problem? Ty and GB.

I can't help you myself, but the guys on this site are great and specialize in old engines. There is a section specifically for old Onan generators. I hope this helps.

Make sure battery is charged; low battery won't engage starter
