ONAN QD 7000, FRONT MOUNTED shuts down when driving through Rain!

Anyone else have this experience? It happens most of the time with hard rain....

Have you figured out what is causing the shutdown? Is the air intake getting wet, soaking the air filter? Moisture shorting out the electronic control board? Do you get an error code giving a clue as to why it shut down? A diesel wouldn't fail from water unless it was the control board failing.

First thing I checked was air intake! Dry, but I built and installed a deflector anyway. Also maddd a shield around the circuit breaker area, assuming I'm getting blow by around the RV shroud.....3 short blinks?

From a quick google search...

The 3 blinks is a primary code signifying that the controller has set a secondary code.
We need to see what that secondary code is.

Go to the genset and use the switch on the set itself.
Press 'Stop' 3 times within 5 seconds. The light in the switch will start flashing.
If the light flashes 3 times, pauses for 3 seconds, and flashes 3 more times, press and immediately release 'Stop' one more time.
This will put the controller into Fault Read Mode.
The light will flash (X) number of times, pause for 1 second, and flash for (X) number of times again. Count the flashes before and after the pause.
This will be the Fault Code.
Example: flash flash, 1 second pause, flash flash flash flash flash is a Fault Code 25.
There may be more than one Fault Code stored, so watch the light very carefully. If there is more than one code, it will display them all in order, and then start over again.

overcurrent(field overload)

More than likely you are getting water into the generator stator or the output connections at the stator, or at the distribution block. Also check for water in any control systems.

If you don't find any water in the generator, check your transfer switch, distribution panel and the airconditioner if they were on (most likely not anything post distro panel though otherwise a breaker would have tripped first, but you never know if a breaker is stuck).

Remember that water coming off a wet road can infiltrate almost anywhere if not properly sealed. A good indication of how hard it will be to find the leak is how long it takes for the generator to quit once it starts raining.

Great info. Thanks "nukerj" for the guidance. I'll be hunting for the cause.
