Onan question

I have an Onan 5.5 on my 2008 Southwind. my question is: will the Onan shut off in time when it has no load? it seems that if i run it more than 15 to 20 minutes w/o a load it will shut itself off. i've confirmed that oil levels, etc are at specs.

Your generator should not be shutting off just becasue there may not be a load on it. It will shut down if the fuel in the tank gets too low (usually 1/4 tank). Also if it gets too hot, low on oil and other malfuntions.

Recently mine has shut off and not from low fuel. Is it safe to assume that the onan will give a fault code for the problem?

I'm not aware of an automatic start / shutdown option on any Onans other than the 7500W, and larger, Quiet Diesels. Sounds like a problem as opposed to a feature.

I know the switch on the generator will flash once, twice or three times, depending on if it is overheated, low oil pressure or needs to be serviced.

There are systems that can shut down the generator if it's not needed

Alas I do not know if your coach has such a system.

How many hours do you have on the generator and how often do you run the unit?

I don't run mine too often and we are home from Florida now and will begin looking into the what's going on with mine. Worked good today before we left southern Michigan for home.

During winter storage we start our gennie and run it for 1-2 hours under approx 1/2 load about every 4-6 weeks. During the use season, when our MH is moving, our genie will usually be running. These things are built for this type of use. I also put 16oz of Seafoam per 25 gals of fuel in the tank every spring to keep things clean after sitting. http://www.seafoamsales.com/products.htm
Wally World and AutoZone carry it at about $6-7 per can.

Being this Onan is in a 2008 unit, and if no error indications exist (flashiing gen light) then I concur with John D that an automatic shut down feature may exist. Check both the generator manual and the RV coach manual.

The generator fuel pickup point is usually at least one-quarter of the way up in a tank, so any less than 1/4 tank and the gen will not run. This is done so as to ensure a little fuel (at least 1/4 tank) is left for the vehicle engine. Usually if the gen shuts down due to low fuel the gen will either not start (no fuel), or will start with much difficulty and if it restarts then it will only run briefly until it once again starves for fuel.

I have the 2008 5.5KW model HGJAB, it does not shut down with no load, regardless of the time running at no load. Looking at the manual, I found that even if the genny shut down due to lack of fuel, you should get the flashing status light.

Either you have a malfunctioning generator or an automatic generator start AGS. AGS can either be standalone (Energy Command 30 is one) or built into an inverter-charger (Magnum and Xantrex have one, usually an option depending on the model). I'm sure there are others available, too.

Good luck!

Chances are that the idle stop speed and governor speeds may need to be adjusted. I have seen this problem many tines with the Onan 5.5 generators.

I have mounted a fan in gen. comp. that blows onto gen. Does not shut down anymore.
