We're the original owner of our 1999 MH. It's been a sweet ride for the last 16 years. It was our first MH and my intention was to buy more than we needed and a bit over our financial-heads at the time. But I knew - similar to buying a home - that we'd grow into it; and we did. What is more typical? Us or you? But more importantly, why???

I agree even though this is our 2nd RV with our first being a firth wheel. We couldn't really justify a DP years ago as our kids were young and we enjoyed bringing our motorcycles (dirt bikes) with us.

With that said, we knew the layout we wanted and just waited until the kids were older.

The DP is a little bigger than what we thought we wanted, but I knew we would grow into it and as it turned out, we did.

Our first was a 22' B plus. With 2 boxers and 2 adults, it was a tad bit cramped. It lasted a year. Our 2nd was a 29' gasser with 2 slides. We enjoyed everything about it when parked but driving it was very stressful. We kept it 3 years. Our current is 35' DP with 4 slides. We're starting our 2nd year with it and love it.

We have had 5 MH's over the past 40 yrs. 4 gassers and 1 diesel. Each buy has been a step up, but the diesel is the only way to go for us.

Our 15 Discovery (7th RV) should have been our 1st Class A. Wasted 75 grand getting here in trade ins. Something to be proud of; room, luxury and power. This has got to be our last!
Went to MT the long way thru WI from TX to break it in.

CampDaven, you are correct. ?The hope with new is warranty will fix and should not have anything wearing out. Been a homeowner for over 25 years, rv owner for one year. I hate it when thing break. Very little patience. It must be fixed yesterday.

But, unfortunately, I heard that at about my 6th rv :(

I think it's all about what you plan to do with it and where you plan to go. We started with tents, tent camper, first SC camper/4WD diesel truck in 1979, re-evaluation of what we would be doing and where we would be going in 1993, and as it turned out one year from retirement for me. At that point we knew what improvements we wanted from experience. We discussed DPs, and just about every other RV imaginable and finally settled on another SC camper with more amenities /4WD diesel truck because that met all our needs at the time and importantly would go to the places we enjoyed that a larger vehicle would not, as well as cross country economically. After returning from AL, GA, WV, EAA Oshkosh, WI through Yellowstone and the Tetons last Summer my wife said if we were going to continue to do long trips we needed another rig. At that point with me at 76 and her at 70 she was afraid someone would fall getting into or out of the bed, wanted a vehicle that would have the interior conveniences available while going down the road without crawling through a hole, and something with a better ride. We now have a 26' 454 powered MH that meets all her criteria and I'm hoping the short length will still get us to most of the "out of the way places" we both enjoy. For us, a larger DP would have been more convenient on the long trips, but would have eliminated many, if not all, the other places we like to go. It, like much of life, was a compromise.

We are on our first, bought a 35' gasser that was 6 years old. Wanted to make sure that we would enjoy this life style before paying big bucks on a newer M.H., will be ordering our second and probably our last next year. This one will be a 40' dp with a tag.

We tend to keep ours for a long time, but not quite as long as yours. 4 Motorhomes in 38 years:

1977 bought a new 23 Ft. Midas Mini Type C. Sold with 97,000 miles

1984 bought a used 1983 26 Ft, Winnebago Chieftain Type A with 3000 miles from a local dealer's consignment. Sold with 115,000 miles

1995 bought a new 26 Ft. Safari Trek Type A. Sold with 137,000 miles

2009 bought a used 1999 28 Ft. Safari Trek Type A with 52,000 miles from original owner friends. Currently at 95,000 miles

We've bought various RV's to fit our family and needs. When we were first married, 38 years ago, we had a small 8' truck camper. Along came our two daughters. We needed a truck at home and a truck camper was a good fit. We bought an 11' 6" Lance camper that we had for 8 years. Girls got bigger and we could afford to have an RV and a truck, so we bought a 27' Class C that we kept for 14 years. The girls got married and we bought a 32' Class A for the two of us. It was used and we intended for it to last a few years until our retirement coach, a DP. We really disliked it, especially the brake issues (Workhorse chassis). We kept it just a year and bought our fist DP. We kept that 9 years. We've now owned our current DP about 18 months.

So it wasn't so much about keeping a coach, but about owning one that fit our needs as our family grew and changed.

Only 9? that's 2 less than I thought. I go through vehicles faster than most also.
