Painted over decals. improvement >perfect

Well, we did it. But I kept in mind that perfect should never stand in the way of improvement. No, I have no idea how long it will last, but for $200, it was worth the try. Here are the before and after pics. Im sorry about the inverted pic. Idk how to fix it.

For future reference -

1. To fix images first preview the post. Images that a inverted, rotated or whatever delete from your post.
2. Go to the location of the image in your file system and open the image with MS Paint (presuming a Windows based PC).
3. Rotate if necessary or do nothing.
4. Save the image. No need to change the file name and you can just save over top of the original.
5. Up load the image and do a second preview just to be sure.

By the way nice paint job. I did the same a few years back and plan to do the next color maybe this summer if not next. Red replaced the heat stroked black decals while the dark silver is starting to show its age after 13 year out in the weather.

Great job to both of you!

What type of paint did you use?

I used krylon fusion spray all in one over the top of a spray binding primer for the metallic copper which went over all the gray. I used sherwin Williams and rolled on the black over the old maroon.

Can you guys provide more information on preparation and methods? Did you remove the decal and then use the outline for taping? My decals are getting long in the tooth as well so this is of high interest to me.

Sherwin-Williams Single Stage https://www.sherwin-automotive.com/r...le-stage-color thru this spray gun https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

I removed the decals using a 3M eraser wheel (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) in an electric drill. This was after first trying a heat gun and plastic putty knife. The fiberglass under the decal was pure white as compared to what had been exposed. Wipe down the fiberglass with mineral spirits to remove any wax and other contaminants. Light scuff with scrubbing pad prior to paint.

I have read of owners painting over decals with good initial results but no idea about any long term problems.

We did not remove the old decals. I sanded lightly which removed some flacking and faded paint. cleaned with denatured alcohol and painted. I used SW on the black which we rolled on, and krylon fusion all in one for the metallic copper. I used the metallic and its various tones made the job easier on large decals, as the various tones eliminated the spots and striping you can get from spray painting large surfaces. I would be happy to share more details with anyone. No doubt rolling on is easiest as taping, and not overspray coverage, is all that is required.

Very nice results, guys. This striping project is on my to-do list. I have replaced 2 of my badly faded "OUTLAW" decals with a more modern font, and like the results. I plan to paint over the 3 maroon stripes on each side with a nice bright red, like Sweetbriar. Red just looks so good on a coach, I don't understand why it is so rare to see. The black and gold decals still look pretty good on my rig, plus I detest maroon. Expect some PM's from me for more details, but prolly can't do this until fall.

Here is my front decal before/after if you are interested, Scott. A local decal business made them for me for $30 each.

Yes, I have a couple of more pressing issues to resolve first, but the decals are definitely something that would enhance the exterior of my coach. I plan to archive this information for future use.

I painted over my old faded stripes when I got my used motorhome. It took 10 years of the aging of the coach!
