Paying at the Pump

Is there a way I can purchase more than $100 of fuel without leaving my credit card inside before refueling? I'm concerned about leaving my card inside those busy "stores" while I refuel.

At some of the truck stops I've used a MasterCard will only let you have $100 or $125 at a swipe but if you use a Visa its $495. Why, I don't know but I'm changing mine to Visa card just because of that feature.

I take my Visa Spark (you get 2% refund on all purchases at will) give amount of $250-$300 they swipe, go back in and am only charged for pumped amount, don't know what the big deal is all about. I check daily on line charges to prevent fraud and no problems

My PENFED cash rewards CC gets 5% rebated on gas swiped at the pump. Often cannot swipe a second time. Then next use my Bank of America CC that nets 3% rebated.

Whether or not you can swipe at the pump to purchase all the fuel you need is something either restricted by the credit card companies or the vendor where you are buying fuel. If you go inside and preauthorize your purchase before filling up you can fill up all at once. Your card will be only charged for the actual purchase.

We ballpark the amount of fuel we'll need to fill up and only preauthorize that amount. Usually its within a couple of gallons of a full tank. Its a hassle to do, but its something put into place to protect both you and the vendor from fraud.

I don't think it's that big of a problem.

I fill up my 43ft dP at a local convenience store close to my storage bay as they always have the best price on diesel. I kept running into the same MC $100 limit issue. I spoke to one of the clerks about it and he told me "just hit the pay inside button and fuel away"! I tired it on the next fill up and it let me pump $200 with no problem. I asked again about this and the clerk said yes, they had to push a button I side to allow me to start pumping, they didn't really worry about me skating out on the bill in a very recognizable, slow, 43ft 300k motorhome, how far/fast could I go!??
Worked for me!!

We have the Pilot/Flying J-Good Sam card which is a pay at pump card and I don't have to go inside at all. Previously, I had "pump start" activated on my Pilot/F-J Rewards card and only had to go inside to settle up. Quite a few Pilot/F-J's also offer pay at pump with VISA.

Often multiple swiped are not allowed. Most of the time in my experience. Message comes up directing you to see the cashier. You can then preauthorize an additional amount via the cashier, but if your card requires swipe to get the discount you don't get the discount.

I vote with docj, we also use a Pilot/Flying J/Good Sam card. No longer have fueling limit at pump, card swipe at the pump and enter my control code, provides a 9 -cent per gallon discount, and I set it up to autopay out of my checking account once a month. And, use the card for discounts in the store. Easy deal.

Here is another vote for the PFJ charge card. A Lifetime GS member gets 8 cents off diesel and 6 cents off gas. That is off the cash price. There is no limit on how much one can pump. The bill is automatically paid each month from my checking account. There are many ways to pay for fuel. Each comes with advantages and disadvantages. With regard to paying for fuel, the PFJ card works best for me.
