PDI is there charge or is free
Typically does a dealer charge for a PDI, I was taken aback when the salesmen said it $599.

The dealer I bought from didn't. You can always walk away or negotiate something like that before you sign anything. Dealers often charge for anything YOU let them get away with. Prep charges, restocking fees, title and registration, etc., if you set a bottom line, all inclusive price, let them juggle it around any way they want, you just offer what you are willing to pay.

If a dealer has a good reputation, then work with them as pointed out above. If the reputation is soft, or unknown, and you like the coach - obtain and independent PDI. Part of the process, and important.
Best of luck,
Smitty

Lazy Days has a PDI dept. They spent three hours with me on each of the two MH's I purchased there. They further let you stay in a delivery site for a few days. I would have never guessed that some dealers charge for this.

PDI's are a dealer grab - PLAIN and SIMPLE!!!!
Its a trend that has grown outrageously here in Canada. We 1st started to notice it with car dealerships then it migrated to what has now seemed like every other thing. Another one that is just as bad is "administration fees".
Its just another way for the dealer to soak a client for extra cash.
I have heard some good lines on why PDI's are charged......one of the best was from a car dealer who said it was "for the paperwork and to register the manufacturers warranty, that takes up office time"
I laughed in the sales managers face and asked him this question;
"So your telling me that your office secretaries only get paid if you sell a car!??"
Shut him up real quick.
Preparing any vehicle for sale is a cost of doing business. Testing RV systems for function, removing the plastic from a new coach, checking the fluid levels on the engine - Well thats all their responsibility to get that unit ready for you!
It should never be charged as a extra and walk away from any deal that has it.
Makes my blood boil.

A long time ago I was in the market for what others agreed was a popular car. The salesman I dealt with didn't want to deal. I pointed out yes, it was a popular model that would sell easily, but he might not be the one who got to sell it. He had tacked on the cost of floor mats, upgraded radio, stripes, etc. I reached in the car and handed him the floor mats and said, "O.K., knock off the $150 for these, and give me 5 more minutes and I'll hand you the radio and peel the stripes off." No more discussion of the 'extras' after that! Set your price and stick to it!!

Newmar pays or makes an allowance to the dealer for the PDI so if they're trying to charge you on a new Newmar then they're trying to "double dip".

I was referring to the PDI they did with me not the one they did before I got there. However there wasn't any charge for that either.
