Persistent painting problem
Hello everyone, I am posting this thread here hoping that if it is not in the right place the moderators will move it. I am having issues painting the upper half of the rear end of my 2004 Tiffin Allegro Bay 36' motor home; an area of approximately 8' X 6'. I am using spray cans for the project (can't afford the alternative.) I am getting a persistent horizontal alternating zebra stripping effect of gloss and over spray, instead of a uniform gloss coverage. In preparation I roughed up the surface before painting, sanded between coats with wet/dry sandpaper and used a tack cloth. Applying additional coats doesn't help. When this first happened, I contacted the mfg. and the rep. said the paint had been improperly stored by the retailer and was separating, so he sent me new paint. However after using the new paint, I still have the problem. Am I just being impatient? Will additional coats eventually result in a uniform gloss finish? I have done a lot of rattle can painting in my day, but this is a first. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remedy this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you may be holding the paint cans too close to the surface when you are spraying.
Hard to say without seeing you do it.
Have you checked the rental stores around to see if they have spray painting equipment for rent?
Good Luck,
Jon

Have had same results with detail gun and it is usually poor overlap.
Tried different angles and still same results.
A good primer usually helps as it usually is formulated to stuck and cover better.
If you have access to an air compressor or use the rv air with a regulator HF has a detail gun for about 10 bucks that works very well.
Easy to clean and use a syrenge without needle to fill so easy to measure and little mess.

What brand of paint are you using?
Spray painting larger flat areas can be difficult due to the limited nozzle size and paint drying too quickly. You must overlap at least half width and paint into a wet edge.

Agreed, you need a slower reducer/thinner which would be a custom mix in a rattle can.

I paint my own street rods and daily drivers if needed. I do not believe that what you are trying to do is possible with a rattle can. You really need a HVLP Gun and real paint. It is just too big of an area for a can

Thanks for your insight guys. I agree, the drying time and nozzle size just are not conducive to painting a surface of that size. I do have a compressor and an HVLP spray gun. My challenge was getting the motor home and the compressor in close proximity to one another. I am just going to have to figure out a way to do that. Just for the record I was using Krylon Cover Maxx Ultra Coverage.

Do you have air in the rv?
Use that.

In addition to the 20 gallon compressor I keep in my garage, that I alluded to earlier, I carry a small 2 gallon compressor in the motor home for emergencies. I also have a 6 gallon compressor I keep for chores around the house. Would either of the two smaller compressors be sufficient for a painting project no larger than this?

Heck yes!
We use a detail gun from HF that only holds a couple ounce of material.
The cup swivels so any angle is good.
We use an old glass medical syrenge to load it so no pouring paint.
Also easy to measure thinner.
Cleanup also fast as just paint with thinner then brush off so to speak.
Uses very little air and we mix on the thick side so coverage pattern is smaller but very little over spray or running.
We are very bad painters but can do great work with this setup and have painted gallons of paint on various projects and worn out one.
It does take time to do the work and you can adjust mixture until it works for you.
A 9 dollar quart of paint from tractor supply goes a long way.
Rust-olium brand us at both lowes and home depot but they are different paints.
Home depot thins with thinner and lowes suggests thin with acetone.
The stuff at lowes covers better and is harder but seems to take longer to cure.
Tractor supply stuff works great as well but color choice related to tractor so may be limited.

I've had great luck with HF guns. with an hvlc gun the material thickness can be important. If you get it too thick it just won't atomize properly. So, the trick is in the mix. paint/hardener vs. thinner. You have to experiment. same with clear coat. I'm assuming that you are not expecting the clear over seasoned clear coat and clear over base coat to have the same gloss. it will be different until at least the 2nd coat or 3rd coat. Sounds like you are having fun experimenting, keep going!!!!

Thanks again for all of the great replies. I checked out O'Rielly's Auto Parts. Fortunately I'm shooting white because they keep one quart cans on the shelf. This stuff is premixed and ready to shoot; no adding hardeners or thinning. How simple is that? Just pour, adjust spray pattern, and paint. If anyone has had experience with this type of paint, I would appreciate hearing from you. But it sounds like this would work. I have both the regular size HVLP gun and the detail gun. any suggestions on which would work best?

I went out today and bought a quart of paint at Farm n Fleet (our Tractor Supply.) The paint is made by Valspar. They recommend thinning with naphtha and clean up with mineral spirits. I am not going to thin if i don't have to. I hope to have all the prep work done today and shoot tomorrow. I will let you know how it comes out.
