How to repair a long windshield crack. Safelite would not repair anything over the length of a dollar bill.

I guess I'm not a big fan of crack or chip repair.

Windshield Replacement
We had to replace ours after a small crack turned to a 18" crack in a couple of days when the weather decided to change rapidly (about 40 deg). Your windshield is a vital part of the overall structural integrity of the vehicle. I would recommend fixing any crack that can be fixed ASAP and those that can't, replace the windshield. It cost us a $500 deductible for a very expensive windshield.

RE: Glass coverage
Keithco & all FYI:
I just had both DS & PS glass replaced and used an outfit in Coburg, OR.
RV Glass Solutions. They did all the legwork in contacting my insurance & glass company. Fortunately I have full glass coverage, mucho dinero!!
The point is, coverage or not, this company is nationwide and uses reputable people to get your glass

"kiethco".......That's not repairable and you shouldn't even try. It's too late now, but I lowered my deductible on my comprehensive to $100.00 for just this type of issue.
My 05 Diplomat had the split windshield and a single side was $1200.00.

There will probably be a mobile Glass repair unit(s) at the FMCA in Pomona March 26,27,28th. If NOT someone there can direct you a mobile unit in the LA area. Looking @ your picture I would NOT try and repair it..It's gone! I have a 02 HR Endeavor and tow 98HHR . Best..

Has anyone added a windshield protection film to a MH? I'm thing of adding it prior to our trip to Alaska this spring. Something like clearplex or Surface Armour. I've seen a lot of MH's complain of cracked glass on the trip up and back from AK. I don't think I need to dd it to the entire windshield just the the outer edge area maybe 3-4" from the edge. It has been my personal experience that most unrepairable cracks start from a edge impact not the center section of the glass. What say you all?

Keithco, For your information if you are interested. I have safeco insurance on my cars and house. When i bought my MH I called my insurance agent to get it covered. She quoted me Progressive because she thought they would be cheaper. Because of the umbrella policy I had to stay with safeco. When she quoted safeco it was almost half of the cost of progressive. I have a rider to my policies that covers glass. Free replacement for any vehicle I own and it is 100.00 per year that covers all of the vehicles.

Don,
Where did you get your Diplomat windshield replaced? I have the one piece and it is cracked from top to bottom. Learned not to wash the windshield when it has been sitting in sunlite

We got 4 stone chips on the Klondike Highway and the Top of the World Highway. The roads are heavily graveled and the trucks you meet go very fast and stones fly right up into your windshield. We were up in July, 2015. They were in all areas of the windshield.

Well Gang,
The "Dollar bill" thing is a crock. We had a chip happen on one of our trips, very close to lowest edge of the passenger side, about a third of the way towards the center, from the corner. I parked the coach when we got home and, went to work on searching out the best self repair windshield chip kits on there.
I found out the Permatex Brand had the best reviews at the time. Well, a bit of procrastination screwed me up. The morning I went to purchase the kit, I went out and checked the chip again. Guess what, that night it has cracked to over 13" long. So, I posted it on here at the time. I was expecting to have to replace the passengers side windshield.
And, contrary to popular belief, different states and insurance companies run things QUITE differently in different states. My deductible is $1K and there's no getting around it. And, that side of the coaches windshield runs very close to $800. So, it was going to be out of my pocket, no matter how you looked at it.
Anyway, it was suggested on here that I try and get the crack "REPAIRED". Well, I'd never heard of such a thing. So, I looked up some windshield repair facilities in our area and guess what I found,? The CRACK DOCTOR!!
So, a phone call to him and, a description of what I had and, soon he was on his way to our home. He worked about an hour and half on that crack and, that was almost three years ago and, it's STILL ONLY 13" LONG! Not only that but, that crack is all but HIDDEN! You have to look hard to see it. They did a fantastic job on it. And, they guaranteed it to not run. So, if I were the OP, I'd look for a crack repair man, get it looked at, and see what they have to offer.
Scott

Dunno about the dollar bill process. We had a rock chip repaired a few years back, and the person who did this said that insurance companies want to have a chip repaired as long as it is not in the drivers direct field of vision.

Windshield insurance ($0 deductible) is only a $100 more on my Progressive policy. One windshield is $3000-5000. That's 30-50 years of policies. Even with a $500 deductible in 5 years I'm going to get a stone thrown at me.
