Question Problem with Kwikee Step

I've seen some listings where there were problems with the Kwikee Step not going in or out. Mine is a little different. I have a 2005 Meridian with a single step. It goes in smoothly and goes back in smoothly. The problem is when it retracts, it gets to the top, it doesn't want to stop, it "stutters" for about 5 seconds and then shuts off. It doesn't seem to affect any operations but it is sort of embarrassing when you are traveling. If anyone has had this problem and short of taking it to the repair shop, I would appreciate any assistance.

Welcome to iRV2.

From your description , it sound like you have a broken tooth in the drive gear system , Because the gears go forward then reverse they always stop with load on the same tooth , so damage to that one tooth can cause your problem.
The gear drive system is not complicated , the biggest problem will be getting the gear box apart because of rust and corrosion from being under the coach for many years on the road.

Kwikee steps , originally produced by Power Gear has been recently bought up by Lippert.
If you don't have the users/parts manual for your steps then going to this site will get you the free download as a pdf .

Kwikee/Powergear steps do not stop/start with a switch, they do so by the controller detecting a rise in current draw when the mechanism reaches the end of travel.
Kwikee says they should be lubricated monthly for proper operation. Also, if the plastic bushings in the hinges are worn-out that can happen. Also, if the ground wire connection is corroded it can cause erratic operation. I suspect that may be what is causing the "stutter".
These two links should prove very helpful:

use this to identify your Kwikee step model
