You may have an intermittent sneak current path to the coil of your automatic transfer switch. When that pathway closes it energizes the transfer coil in the switch but when the switch transfers it does not find AC power available on board and drops out again. The other possibility which occurs to me is the exact reverse were it drops out on an intermittent open but pulls up because AC current is present on the shore line. The switch pulling in and dropping out is the thumping noise.
Until the sneak current path or intermittent open is found and cleared it will keep occurring. The design of these transfer assemblies differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from model to model so I can't even guess whether your sneak current pathway or intermittent open is in the DC or the AC wiring system.
The more I read about these transfer switch issues the more I tend to think that we would all be better off with manual transfer switching such as when you unplug the AC wring on one of the simpler campers from the generator and plug it into the extension cable to hook up to the site power.
